Return of the Gong
Apr. 29th, 2026 08:00 amWent to a pretty awesome show last night. Tatsuya Nakatani came back and played at B-Side. First I picked Graham up and we went up there together. The opening act was Art Edmaiston, Logan Hanna, and Steve Hirsh. Saxophone, guitar, drums! They had some good jazz sounds! Then Tatsuya did his thing and it was amazing as always. He recognized me before he played and waved to me (ah, always I'll be memorable as the guy who broke his bow! but at least he's nice about it!). Then he talked to me a little bit afterwards and said that he struggled through that set because there was a low feedback throughout it from the pa (at one point in the middle it actually peaked and fed back loudly where everyone could here it and he pretty much stopped and asked the sound guy to turn the pa off), and he said that while most of us couldn't hear it, he does subtle things with the gongs that changes pitches and he'd change the pitch but then just hear this one steady, unchanging tone from the pa and it was throwing him off. He played great though. I picked up some merch afterwards: another Tatsuya Nakatani shirt; Tatsuya Nakatani & Shane Perlowin: Anatomy of a Moment; Yea Big, Jon Byler Dann, and Tatsuya Nakatani: To Lower the Fever of Feeling; Tatsuya Nakatani + Sean Hamilton: Three Improvisations; Oswald • Westgaard • Moses • Cheli • Edmaiston: Memphis Metaphysics; Sparks Quartet: Live at the Vision Festival XXVI; and Steve Hirsh: Root Causes. There was this kind of separate show afterwards and Elizabeth was playing with this violinist Ethan, and I wanted to see it but it would have been too late and I was behind on sleep. B-Side records their shows so I should remember to go check out the youtube video later.
