My biggest day of Indie Memphis is over now. I was even able to catch up on some sleep! Though I was really tired much of the evening yesterday. I went back up to Hattiloo for the block of Kevin Jerome Everson shorts. These were very experimental and the audience was not liking it and, being very typical of a Memphis audience during an experimental film screening, turned super-obnoxious and rude and loud. A lot of people finally realized they actually have the ability to just leave, though they weren't able to just leave and had to leave very loudly and obnoxiously. And even the people who stayed through the one that drove most others away, gave sarcastic applause after it was done. This was a single static shot of a couple playing foosball for 11 minutes (done up like it was from the 70s, apparently based on an old photograph). There was also another one of out-of-focus bottles being filled with alcohol for 8 minutes. There were some other that had something closer to a "hook" with someone actually talking or whatever (still experimental and requiring some degree of patience). I get why this would not be for everyone, or even almost anyone or whatever. But ya know, you can either try to meet something working outside your expected norms on its own terms or at least halfway or at least being open-minded about it, or if you can't do that, you know, quietly leave and don't feel entitled to the assumption that just because you don't understand something that it is inherently not understandable and you have free reign to be loud and rude. Anyway, after that I watched Milford Graves Full Mantis, about the jazz drummer. It was good. It had some surprises with the parts where he's now into using biometrics and medical software to make random bleepy-bloopy electronic sounds. The tent outside the Hattiloo had a dj playing some good Eritrean/Ethiopian/African music that I enjoyed from time to time during a couple breaks. I finished the night with another midnight movie over at the Square. I saw Sisters, which I'd never seen before. It was definitely enjoyable, not the best De Palma, it's a bit early and rough in parts but there are parts that are quite good. But then I got to sleep and now here we are. Think I caught up. Daylight savings also helped give me a little time this morning.
