Jacques came over yesterday and we worked on finishing the song. I'd bounced the guitar down to one track just before he came over and I was trying to record the bass drum, but was having mic troubles. Then I just couldn't find the SM57. He came over and I settled for something else and got that down. Next was the snare. For some reason that also had everything sounding terrible. Finally I said fuck it and tried something where I just let it peak the fuck out in the red and it sounded awesome. It wasn't what I was initially going for but we decided it was a keeper. Then we recorded the drum synth. Well, there was a hang-up with that as well. The power adapter died when we had that mini-tour. We took a trip to Radio Shack for a new one. Then there was the damn issue that you have to know what fucking size connector to get so we had to go back home and get the drum synth and bring it back. But it all worked out and that was recorded with much success. Then Jacques wanted to redo parts of the vocals: the quieter parts, leaving the louder part. We tried something new in the recording. I gave Jacques this metal umbrella stand/bucket thing and had him hold it, singing into it right up to the mic. It sounded pretty nice. I think the vocals did end up sounding better. We also bounced down a few tracks that were uneven (drums and the drum machine track that had bongos and handclaps together). Then we set to mixing the whole thing down. Well, there was much frustration and anxiety and then it was late and Jacques was getting texted to go. We finally made it through one pass. It was mostly good. There are some mistakes so we'll probably try again. Mostly it sounds good and we're getting pretty happy with it. Oh, yeah. I should add that Brad was supposed to be the one to come today, but he didn't. He wouldn't return our calls. Jacques came over instead and I finished up the parts he would have played and the rest. Anyway.
