had a little trouble getting to sleep monday night...ended up with about 4 hours...but i woke up at 10 and after getting ready i picked Keith and off we were to St. Louis! it was pretty cool that i was able to drag him along...road trips are definately better with company...i can't believe i hadn't been out of town since the fuckin' Wire show...i don't think i can deal very well without travelling at least semi-frequently...

but uh, on the way up there, when we first decided to stop for some food maybe half an hour past West Memphis, we got off on this exit that had a sign for a few food places...but then we get out and start driving and don't see anything...i fucking hate it when they put shit on the side of the road for stuff that's a couple of miles or so from the fucking interstate...after we turned around to check the other direction (not finding anything after a reasonable distance either) we started to head back to the interstate...then i noticed the sign for whatever town was nearby: Osceola...you prob'ly don't remember an incident that happened 3 years ago when David and i went to Chicago to see the Nosie Pop festival (i can't believe it was that long ago...) but we had stopped off to get the oil changed in some small town...and when we went to the first gas station to ask directions, i noticed in their wacky bumper stickers rack this one that i almost got but for some stupid reason did not...and it's pathetic that this very lost sticker opportunity has plagued me, at least slightly, over the past 3 years...but i saw the sign and recognized that it was the same town! we were at the same exit! and that gas station right by the off-ramp had to be the same one i saw that sticker at!!! so i went in and they were still there!!! so i bought it! a bumper sticker reading, "What's the difference between a woman on pms and a pit bull?... LIPSTICK!" and there's a little drawing of a mean dog with a very red bottom lip...now, the reason this is so fucking funny is sort of an inside joke...but if you're anywhere near as immature as me or my friends then you'll find it hilarious!!! i'll give you a hint...lipstick: think dogs and euphemism...but anyway...years of torment and the victory is finally mine!!!

oh yes, one cool thing happened in West Memphis...we get in the town and fucking traffic is backed up to hell...it's barely moving...we're in this shit for a little while...finally we get to where I-40 merges with I-55...it's still backed up and barely moving, BUT that's where an access road runs alongside the insterstate...so i got the brilliant idea of getting off on that and driving down it to get past the shitty traffic...and it worked!!! it was the coolest thing ever! and its last exit was RIGHT past where the source of congestion ended...it was totally sweet...my proudest moment...

overall the drive up there was pretty pleasant...even though my car doesn't have a/c...aside from the beginning, traffic wasn't too bad...and there was rain once but it was pretty mild...we had gotten a bit of a late start...we left maybe an hour and a half later than my original "plan" suggested...but it wasn't too bad...we got into St. Louis a little before 6...and headed straight to Vintage Vinyl...i bought:
Mogwai: Happy Songs for Happy People
Flying Saucer Attack: Distance
Echoboy: Giraffe
Xiu Xiu: Knife Play
Swans: Cop/Young God•Greed/Holy Money
the latter was pretty cool 'cuz i'd never seen it in a jewel case before...just in one of those big folding things like my copy of Filth / Body to Body, Job to Job...it's apparently beiong put out by Thirsty Ear now instead of Young God...sort of ironic as uh, Young God's the title of one of the compiled records...but as i think jewel cases are thousands of times better than digipacks of any sort, i have no complaints...

next was the show...Quix*o*tik was the opening band...i'd seen them a few times opening for SY in 2000...their bass player wasn't there tonight...that was kind of good 'cuz one of the things that bothered me was that the bass and guitar would be playing the exact same thing most of the time...

oh, i'll add that i was a little worried 'cuz of the number of people that were already in line when we arrived...at first we were standing outside, but some guy on the staff came up and was announcing that people over 21 could enter through the bar...so we did...and there was less of a line (and a/c)...we were still able to get right up at the front...we were a little to the side, but directly in front of Lee...so that was pretty cool...their set was pretty similar to what they'd been playing last year...though they did play 2 new songs...they opened with one...it was good but i was a little disappointed by that one...it was a lot like the Murray Street stuff, but not as good...the one they played later i thought was really fucking good...though overall i thought their performance started off a little weak, however, after a few songs it turned around and was really fucking great...maybe the best version of "Rain on Tin" i've seen...let's see if i can remember all the non-Murray street stuff they played (i think they played the whole album...) "Schizophrenia," "(I Got a) Catholic Block," "Teen Age Riot," "Eric's Trip," "Kool Thing," and "Drunken Butterfly"...not in that order...i was just going chronologically, if you couldn't tell...i think that was it but there's a chance i forgot something...they did 2 encores...the first was "Disconnection Notice" and "Teen Age Riot"...the second was "Drunken Butterfly"...that was pretty cool...i wasn't expecting the second 'cuz i could see the clock that was backstage and it was like right at 11pm by then...and thought they wouldn't be able to anyway...but they did so that was cool...but i'll just say again...great fucking show...i swung by the merch table and got another Sonic Youth shirt...this one is a picture of a young Thurston holding a copy of Metal Machine Music...i thought that was cool as shit...it's like saying i like SY and MMM in one fell swoop!!!

the drive back was pretty alright too...of course, i was tired as shit at the beginning of the trip...so the drive back i was uh, even tireder...but it wasn't too bad...i didn't die in a horrible car wreck or nothin'...dropped Keith off, made it home, and passed the fuck out...

this last paragraph isn't really realted to that...i just wanted to share the fact of TWO of my recent cd purchases being terrible duds...that Scientist comp and that Herbie Hancock cd...the Scientist stuff was all later...like late 80s, some 90s...really cheesy...i was disappoitned...and the Herbie Hancock...well, at least the last song is actually pretty good...though the other three are pretty awful...once again, really cheesy...i wasn't expecting anything along the lines of the sheer brilliance that is Sextant...but i thought maybe it'd be some good funk...nope...i mean, i know he's a fusion pioneer and all that...but why does it have to SOUND like fusion...UGH! Sextant doesn't sound like fusion...Miles Davis' shit doesn't SOUND like fusion...there's good stuff happening throught the album, but it's dominated by cheese...oh well...i do intent to give them one more listen...but i don't think it's too promising...

that mogwai album is some fine rock music. i got it yesterday as well. same with that swans comp, only i didn't get that yesterday, but you know that.

umm...they have like 2 copies of this sonic youth/erase errata split 7" at last chance. you should pick it up, as it's a limited thing.

someone put a copy of the setlist up on sonic youth's message board. i added it to my post about the show as a comment.

i was at vintage vinyl the same time as you and in the same area at the show.

i refrained from purchasing any cds.

i was up at the very end of the barricade (lee's side) for the end of the show and a couple people back from the barricade and on the far side of the floor by lee for most of it.

in honor of lee i wore my black and white striped tee shirt like he wore in the dirty promo pics.

yes i am a dork

hey!

how's it going?

okay- i'm feeling really dumb and braindead- but lipstick on dogs? is there something beyond that image of a dog with lipstick that i'm not getting?

or maybe it's, like you said, an 'inside' joke thing that wouldn't make any sense if explained to an outsider.

are you gonna put that on your car?!

how are you enjoying the flying saucer attack and la new radiohead?
From: [identity profile] ateolf.livejournal.com
lipstick = penis...especially for dogs...that's where the term originated...'cuz dog weiners look like lipsticks...it's just funny on so many "levels"...

and no, i will not put it on my car...it comes across misogynistic and stupid and redneckish...it's more of a personal humor that won't broadcast to the public...i might stick it on something like a guitar or something...but i don't know...maybe i'll just pin it to the wall...

i'm actually listening to the FSA now...i mean, i've already had most of their other stuff...and i'm pretty sure i've heard this one before...but with FSA you pretty much know what you're gonna get...but yea, it rules...as for the new Radiohead, i'm liking it a lot...i don't think i've listened to it a whole lot since i got it, but that's 'cuz i happened to have bought a bunch of cds these past few days and still haven't gotten around to like 2...but damn do i love cds...but yea, i think the new Radiohead's great...

lipschtick

hahahahahahaha!

okay... having animals i get it now! before my cat mr. fleahead was fixed he used to get, um, uh, lots of "pink asparagesses."

maybe you should put it on your car along with a "National Organization for Women" sticker or something. just for kicks.

yeah, yeah! i love the saucer attack. although sometimes in the car i can't listen to them. because i can't tell if it's the music or if my car's fucked up.

i'm liking the new radiohead the more i listen to it. i just think they're such an odd band. i remember back in '94 or something when they put out 'i'm a creep' and i just thought it was another band riding the wave of nirvana-goes-mtv-grunge or whatever. and then a few years back they start putting out THE shit. weird. equally weird because it seems so many different "types" of music enthusiasists like them a whole bunch (hip-hoppers, top 40ers, the indie kids, the coolie kids, etc., etc.) what is it about them that makes people go ga-ga? is it what their "image/message/mirror" of capitalism-cum-empire? are they striking some sort of multiglobal nerve...

oh shit. nevermind. that's all just a bunch of substance-addled rambling!

but, really, i'm curious.

opinions? musings?

hey- have you checked out that interpol? it's all popular and stuff, not nearly as snooty as rare psychedelia, but it's super great, and i'd bet you might dig 'em.

we've always refered to cats as having "barbed carrots"...(and pigs have "corkscrews" by the way...)

and i actually like "Creep," though the rest of that album is mostly pretty lame...but uh, i don't know exactly what the craze is...i know most of the masses like 'em for "Creep"...which is kind of annoying...it'll come on and a bunch of idiots will go "woo!" and start singing along...almost makes me wish i didn't like the song...and none of them have paid attention to their past 4 albums either...

and i've heard Interpol...the single anyway...i didn't really care for it...for some reason i thought i might like 'em...i guess i fell for the hype...but i didn't find it to deliver or whatever...
