Hackathon!
Oct. 19th, 2018 06:03 pmI spent a good part of the night last night working on my music. I know have over ten minutes in my pieces (just over a third of the way there!, for this phase). So that's pretty exciting. Mary Beth and I also finished the last season of Nathan for You. Was up late 'cuz didn't realize the last episode was going to be full-on movie-length! But it was all very enjoyable. And I wasn't tired today or nothing. Which is good 'cuz it was the Hackathon! And it was a pretty awesome Hackathon. My team is moving on to the next stage (probably about half the teams, mostly anyone who had something more than just a powerpoint describing an idea). We had three parts to what we did. I worked on the first part. It's actually kind of similar to some other work I've done (a different thing, but there's common elements). So I churned out that whole piece and for once got it completely working. So I was pretty happy with that. It's a little webhook that listens to contracts that get cancelled and sends a text to the customer's technician (as they in theory generally have the best relationship with the customer and could possibly help that attrition). We have one more thing to add to it where it will update a database that will trigger the information to show up on their app as well. So now that we're moving on we can spend a little time on it. Ooh, and when they announced our team they even said something along the lines of "fantastic job" and used us as an example of "obviously" not just using a power point. Anyway, even though we didn't do anything exotic or use new or fancy technologies, it was pretty satisfying to knock something out so close to fully developed (also it's something that should have some big business value, which really helps you win these Hackathons). Other things about the Hackathon. The shirt this year is the best design so far. It's actually really awesome and something I would just wear outside of work. Early in the morning, close to when I first arrived, there was this song that was playing on the overhead that was a weird mashup of "Another One Bites the Dust" and a Fela Kuti song (and some other random bits sprinkled in) and even though it was two musical things I love (that being the one Queen song I think is great) the overall thing deeply offended my musical sensibilities. Okay, that's all and now it's the weekend!
