Mary Beth and I went out to Crosstown yesterday evening (afternoon? it's hard to feel like it's evening when there's still so much light out). There was some exhibit about america. So art with flags and Drumpf. There was also some food. Food that I didn't eat: twinkies, packaged pies, tootsie rolls...food that I did eat: doughnuts, watermelon. After that it was grocery shopping and while there my ankle started hurting. I guess it's the building up of standing a bunch there after having stood a bunch all week at work. It's still a little sore. I guess I'll need to keep myself off it. And last night Mary Beth and I listened to the trap set podcast with Sara Lund, one of my all-time absolute fucking drum heroes. It was pretty interesting hearing more details about Unwound's dynamic as a band. I knew some about the bad stuff, the passive aggressiveness and inability to communicate, though there was more detail. I didn't know about how they worked together musically, how it came together very naturally and collaboratively. Which makes a whole lot of sense when you listen to them. How each part is so distinct yet fit around each other so well. It's not just that, all the parts are both working together and against each other at the same time. Everyone seems to be constantly creating space and filling in the space left over by the others. So often each part in a song will be centered on a completely different rhythmic idea than the others, yet they fit together maybe like pieces of a puzzle. Anyway, these are just my own musings about what a great band they were. Also, I went to bed too late to be up this early. Ugh.
