Ambient and Experimental Music Show

Had a good ol' Memphis Concrète show at The Lamplighter so I went up there with Mary Beth early in the evening. There was a pretty good turnout as far as these things go. First up was Bobi and now as a three-piece. It's funny 'cuz the person I actually talked to about it ended up having a work thing come up and then there was going to be another person to replace him (there were initially two of them) and then when the show happened there was a third person as well (Ben who co-runs Havenhaus). They were good. It was bass, guitar, and synth and noisy but kinda trancey. Kinda like a no wave band making ambient music? Next up was aster and his set was great as always but he had his wife Lauren making this live analog projection art. With a projector and flashlight and all kinds of shaped glass and reflective sorts of objects. Really cool visuals! Next up it was Ceremonial Abyss on tour from Portland. I had had a show set up with him a couple of years ago and then he had tour problems and couldn't make it. I'd been really excited 'cuz the stuff of his I'd heard is really excellent so I was happy to get him coming back. Naturally this was a really great set! Very good ambient stuff and he had a couple parts where he was warping the sounds of soul records on tape. Last up was Dinosauria and his set was great as always. Towards the end he was doing these very spacey, early Tangerine Dream kinds of atmosphere and it was cool. Hung around a little while chatting afterwards. Brian (Ceremonial Abyss) gets around with public transportation and had a story about how long he had to wait for the late bus coming from the train station. And knowing the state of public transit in Memphis in general and especially after 11 pm, I offered him a ride to the Greyhound station (next stop Wichita) so I dropped him off there after the show. The show ran pretty close to on-time so it wasn't crazy late that I got in, but I'm an old wiener.
