Show Night
Jan. 5th, 2025 12:32 pmMary Beth and I did a quick Fresh Market run for a couple of regular and necessary things we weren't able to get on the regular grocery runs. Then at night I went to a late show at the Lamplighter. Ironing came back to Memphis! It was a 10 pm show with five bands on the lineup! (Thankfully the extra fifth band wasn't there and didn't end up playing so while it ended quite late, it wasn't as ridiculous as it could have been). Dinosauria played first and his set was great. Then it was neon glittery also with a very good set. Acid 87 was next. They were the touring band that set up this show. I helped them a little by getting them in contact with Dinosauria. Then I was trying to get Ironing a show set up somewhere the same night and was unsuccessful and got him in touch with them to jump on their bill. I would have maybe done more with it but it all happened right as I went out of town. Aid 87 was alright, noise and power electronics stuff. There are three people in it and it started off with just one and the other two gradually came on. It started with this loop of some news report thing about MLK's assassination (I guess their version of "Hello, Memphis!"?) and the one guy doing improvised spoken word (it was a little muffled and kinda hard to make out everything) while he gingerly hit this pot lid gamelan sort of setup. Then the second guy came on and was doing something on a table with electronics making the harsh noise sounds. Then the third guy came on and did the screaming vocals through flanger or phaser or something. The singer was wearing a Charles Manson shirt so kind of corny. Along with the second guy doing the Whitehouse fist pumping bit. (And there were leather jackets and sunglasses worn.) Anyway, it was kinda good and kinda cheesy. Ironing played last and his set was great. Same setup as the first time, fucking with records and tapes and radio and all kinds of craziness. I got a bit of his merch: two more shirts and two cds (of other musicians he's put out): Juice Machine: The Deer and Andrew Weathers: AW Walks in Two Different Commerce Spaces. Got home close to 2 am so ended up sleeping pretty late today!
