Then it was the last day of Gonerfest. We stayed for the whole short Sunday. First it was Ned Collette and he was alright, folky and the music was good, I might have been able to fully get into it if the singing had just a smidge less Bob Dylan in it (could have been worse, but still a little bit of a detractor). Next up was a band called Water Damage and they were described (I'm paraphrasing loosely) as Neu! with some Swans...and that is an extremely apt description. They were really good. Probably the best act that I went in not knowing anything about. They played just one krautrock rhythm for the whole thing with lots of noisy guitars and stuff (they had a few musicians from the other bands playing today joining them, like Ryan Davis and a couple members of Oneida). One guy just played what looked like a very small lap guitar, but it was like mandolin sized (but looked more like guitar strings) and he just bowed it. Anyway, yeah they ruled. After that it was Ryan Davis & Roadhouse Band and they were alright, indie country folk stuff. They had a bit of stuff that kept them more interesting for this kind of thing. They had a song in the middle that I liked a lot, and then the last couple I liked too. And last it was Oneida. They're a band where I have one album (and a split with Liars) and I haven't listened to it very much and didn't really get into it at the time. Thought about getting rid of it years later but upon a revisit I liked it more, but still haven't spent much time with it. And that album's almost twenty years old now. So wasn't sure what to expect, but they were really good live. Lots of krauty noisy jams. Their last song was the one where they sing "light" very fast in unison together for like twenty minutes. Definitely enjoyed getting to see them live. I swung by their merch table afterwards and picked up a t-shirt as well as their latest two cds: Onedia: Success and Oneida: Expensive Air.
After a bit of a break at home, I went out by myself to another show at the Hi Tone. I got there and Towering Flesh had already started but I caught a good bit of his set and it ruled and was nice and noisy. Next up was Dinosauria and he played maybe one of the best I've seen from him. He did a lot of different things in a short amount of time...it felt very orchestrated (and I don't always think being more orchestrated is necessarily better but this was really good). He also ended with a cover of the Twin Peaks theme. Next up was Asmik and their set was really good. A good bit of dancing. Then it was Morrison Jones (he was having an ep release show) and Asmik was doing the backing sounds for him. He came out wearing a mask and carrying a real lantern. It was cool. (He used to go under, I think it was JR Truth.) Anyway, it was a good set. Now back to work after my long weekend.
