Right after work Mary Beth and I went downtown (after dropping off a couple packages along the way) for a big two part date. First we went to Good Fortune and had some wings and ramen and some really incredible mocktails. And mine was such that on first sip I was like, this is pretty good, but with each successive sip more and more I was like, oh my god this is delicious. Then we walked over to the Orpheum. We'd gotten a little ahead of schedule and were a bit early, but it was so fucking hot out yesterday that we were thankful the Orpheum was letting people in so early (a little over an hour before the movie started). But it was sooo cool inside and the seating was first come first serve so we got a good spot and it had amassed a pretty good sized crowd by the time it started. So it was the 1925 Phantom of the Opera with a live Wurlitzer pipe organ score! I'd never actually seen any iteration of Phantom of the Opera, just knowing about it through cultural osmosis. This movie was good. It had a lot of nice visuals. The story can be a bit overly melodramatic but it's fun. And Lon Chaney is pretty great. Oh and the ending has that old silent movie charm of being extremely abrupt. It's of course a lot of fun hearing that pipe organ play for over an hour and a half. After that we walked back down to Good Fortune to see about ending the night with some more drinks there but they were pretty packed. So on the way home we stopped by Cameo. I had some more delicious mocktails. When we first got there (it wasn't super late, probably still just before 9) it was maybe just a little shy of being crowded. A pretty good sized amount of people but still some space and it was fine. But by the time we got our second round, more people showed up and it was more like crowded. And the table next to us was a bunch of frat boys being super loud and super obnoxious. But by then it was probably about the worst time of the week to be at a bar. The mocktails were quite good though.
