Liberty, Equality, Fraternity
May. 30th, 2024 07:59 amI finished reading Hogg by Samuel R. Delany. It was really good. It also definitely lives up to its infamous reputation. Now that I'm finished I need to think about it a bit. In the afternoon after work, I passed out and took a bit of a nap. I woke up just in time to eat some dinner and go see an Indie Memphis screening down the street with Mary Beth. We saw West Indies and it was very good. It was described as a "musical" and that's a little though not entirely misleading. It is also pretty hard to categorize (except as an obvious satire). Almost all of it takes place on a set that recreates a slave ship, but it's clearly a set and inside a big warehouse (which you can see most of the time). And almost all of it takes place on this slave ship set whether it's taking place in the French West Indies or in Paris (both in "modern" times, 1970s) or retelling the history of slavery in French colonies. And there are musical elements. There are a few songs sung though there's a little more of dance numbers (without singing mostly) but mostly it's more straight dialog. I guess also the set stage kinda gives the feel of a musical. Anyway, good movie!
