Yesterday Mary Beth and I did our Fresh Market run during the lunch break and then I finished reading Blue Light in the Sky & Other Stories by Can Xue. It was okay. There was a bit that felt like it should be good in theory. It did remind me a lot of Kafka in the dream logic of the action. The characters' motivations and responses almost never made sense and their motivations and responses were constantly changing and frequently becoming the opposite in an instant. Sometimes a story picked up a certain weird mood or atmosphere, but for the most part there wasn't much of a mood and they just kind of felt formless. All this I could see being done well, but the writing felt awkward. I'm not sure if that's due to the translation or if it was intentional (or both?). Anyway, I was really hopeful about this one and I'm glad I read it, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me though I didn't dislike it. After dinner we hung out with Peanut for a good while. Later at nigh we broke out the fancy champagne that wasn't drunk on our actual anniversary. I guess that's about it for now.
