I got this cd in the mail yesterday: Bowery Electric: s/t (a cd I already have but now it's just been reissued with the Drop ep (which had never previously been on cd before) as a bonus, so yeah, that warrants an upgrade!). Later at night I went to Jill's birthday party and Jill and Suroor's place. I figured it wouldn't be too bad because there would be musical instruments to nerdily jam on. It was a little weird 'cuz I was about twice as old as everyone else there. I was hoping I wouldn't be the only oldie showing up. There were a couple of other people I know or kind of know: Ben and Vinnie (Ben's the guy that was all excited about the Milton Babbitt piece being performed at Memphis Concrète this year and I've met Vinnie at shows here and there occasionally through the last few years). So I mostly stayed in the little music room hiding from the main party. A few of us had a little jam session. I'd brought my toy synth instruments and tried to play them at first but mixer inputs were limited and I thought the built-in speakers would work but they weren't nearly loud enough so I quickly abandoned them for the most part. The longest jam I got on this organ that they have and it was fun to jam on. At one point Vinnie got the bass and was playing "Mother Sky" or something that sounded like it so we had a nice krauty kind of jam. There was also someone jamming a lot and I think her name is Lily, but I'm bad at remembering names. Others came and went. At a few points, the other people in the room went out to go mingle and stuff and I tried a couple times. So I was wearing my shirt with the Bartleby the Scrivener characters' names on it and got a few confused questions. And to one guy I explained that it was a Melville story and he said, "oh, I think I've heard of him, he wrote something about an old man and a fish, right?" The second time I came out the party had kicked up more and it was filled while a whole bunch of people and I'm all, this is too many people. So I mostly just tried to stay in the jam-room, like I said. I felt not along 'cuz shortly after that Lily came back in and was like "there's too many people out there, I'm going to hide in here." Yeah! Anyway, more jamming and then another round of people leaving to mingle and I left pretty early. Didn't get much of a chance to talk to Jill or Suroor as they were busy with the whole party and lots of people thing. Anyway, thus ends the story of me being old and never one for parties anyway. I did enjoy the random jamming, but most of the party was a typical twenty-somethings' kind of party. Okay, I think I've talked about it all enough!
