It was another awesome night at the drive-in! The reprise of the Stanley Kubrick marathon of nine years ago! (This time with no Dr. Strangelove.) On the way to pick up Kole, I grabbed some ice from the gas station but when I got there I realized that I'd left my wallet at home so had to turn back and get it. So then I'm running slightly behind and am slightly flustered but it was all good. Picked up some Five Guys on the way too (and dropped some back off to Mary Beth, all this is in close proximity to our house). Then I picked up Kole from Burke's. They got off work at 6 so I figured that's great timing to get to the drive-in by the times I saw that gates were supposed to open at 6:30. I feel like I'm running behind, but then we were there a little before 6:30 anyway. We're waiting a little bit and watching a couple employees arrive and leave and come back and walk around and stand there and etc. It's well past 6:30 so I'm wondering what's going on, but then I see the sign up on the building saying that gates are at 7 so online lied to me. But that's fine. If we'd gotten there a little later we wouldn't've been second car in line waiting. So yeah, we got the best spot right up front and center. After a bit the people who did the promotion design had a merch table set up and I picked up a t-shirt for the event. The trees were casting good shade when we got up there so it wasn't horribly hot and then when the sun went down it was kind of cool for the night. The weather was pretty great, actually...for most of it anyway. It was great seeing all the movies. The order went: The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: a Space Odyssey. I don't know how The Shining still manages to keep getting better every time I see it, but it does! One thing that stuck out to me on this viewing, that I don't know how I could have missed before because it's so obvious and out there, but I at least don't remember picking up on it, is the discrepancy between and implications of Jack's "accident" with Danny having been three years earlier and how, in response to this, he gave up drinking and hadn't touched a drop of alcohol since...five months earlier. I mean, there's still a lot to pick up on regarding Jack's abusive role but I didn't remember this detail being so strikingly off and blatant. A Clockwork Orange was great to revisit too. And of course 2001 is always 2001. While watching these movies, at times we would see some lightning off in the distance, but a big storm never got to us. Weather was very nice and perfect, up until just after the Stargate sequence started, we started feeling a few drops of rain coming down. And I'm all like, come on, fuck!, we're so close, please hold off a little longer. But it did pick up a little bit. At least it never came down hard. We didn't feel it crossed the threshold of needing to get in the car so we stayed out in it getting a little bit wet (but not too bad). I will say that the participation from Nature nine years ago was more magical than this time, 2001 ending with a sunrise as opposed to the rain. But yeah, it was still a great night. It all ended just before 4 so it was able to get to sleep before the sun came up, at least. Had to wake up "early" (considering when I went to bed) today because I'm meeting my parents to eat at a weird time, but if I'd gotten too much sleep today it'd be much harder to get to bed tonight at a decent hour, I guess. Anyway, Kubrick drive-in, ta-da!
