Bowling Again
Sep. 9th, 2019 05:22 pmMary Beth and I went bowling for Sarah's birthday yesterday at noon. We went to Billy Hardwick's and hadn't been there in a good while. It's funny 'cuz back in the day (15 years ago or so, give/take) it'd always felt like the "new" bowling lanes, relatively fancied out or whatever. Now it has a little of that old and worn down feeling. I mean, I don't know if there is a "new"-feeling bowling alley now. But it was just kind of an interesting observation. I mean, it's nowhere near the time-warp level that Imperial Lanes (rest its blessed soul) had been. My game was pretty shit. I started off pretty well and fell off quite sharply. Though I picked up a bit in the end. My most impressive move was where I had a double-split (is that what you call it? a split with two pins on each side). It was the first time I attempted to put spin on the ball and it spun and it actually hit the pins I was aiming for and knocked them down and sent one flying to the other side (it didn't actually hit the pins on the other side, but I was impressed that it worked as well as it did! most probably a fluke but still!). We played three full games. My first game I did okay, started off strong and then waned. The second game was really bad. The third started off really bad but I actually came back around towards the end. I ended up with two strikes that last game (the only strikes I got the whole time). And one of them was on the last frame so that helped me come back quite a bit! I hadn't bowled in a long while, but hopefully the next time I bowl I remember a thing or two. The heaviest ball (14 pounds) is probably too heavy and will make my hand tired after a while (that's what I started off with). The second-heaviest (12 pounds) is probably the sweet spot. For a while, when my hand was at its tiredest I rested by going down to a 10 pound ball, but while it helped me rest it's probably too light. That rest is probably why my score went back up towards the end, but after I switched back up to the "middle" ball. Okay, enough boring fucking bowling shit. While we were out east we went to Target and I got exciting things like socks and underwear. Then to Macy's where I bought but did not receive a new pillow. They're doing a pre-sale so I paid for it but have to come back and pick it up on Friday. That's fine, I could have walked home with it but figured it was worth saving the money! At home I tried working on this proposal for Crosstown Arts to get picked to put on this special show or whatever but it's been very hard writing it and I made very little progress. It's due tomorrow in the morning or early afternoon so I need to finish this shit tonight. Have procrastinated too much already, but it's not coming easily. Later at night Mary Beth and I watched the first part of this old PBS documentary on New York (I guess called New York: a Documentary Film) by Ric Burns (budget Ken Burns?, his younger brother anyway and very much the same style). There was some quaint optimism about capitalism that felt of its time and dated (but kind of in that recognizable and "cute" sort of way). Anyway, then I worked today and that's about that!
