On Monday Mary Beth and I went to see Mad Max: Fury Road. It was pretty good. I'm not a huge action movie dude, but it was entertaining and had enough keeping it interesting. And the things I found cheesy were pretty minor and infrequent. I do think it would be good to see again not in 3D. I mean, it's cool seeing a movie like that in 3D if it's available, but I think a lot of the depth of the practical effects was lost in the artificial feel of the 3D environment, I mean, watching it felt like most of it was cgi, which I know it wasn't. Also, it's gotten me wanting to see the original Mad Max movies (I'd only ever seen Beyond Thunderdome, when I was a kid).
On Tuesday we went back to the same theater (even the same room) to see the video of the Stratford Festival's production of Antony and Cleopatra. I'd never seen or read it before so that was pretty cool.
Wednesday was the final installment of the Three Colors trilogy: Red. Going in, it was the one I'd remembered the least about (though much of my memory was jogged once it'd started). So it was pretty nice seeing again. It's always great to see movies you love in an actual theater.
Last night there was an exhibition of photos related to Faulkner at the Cotton Museum. Like, his last decade or so. From a photographer who was somewhat friends of his. Not a whole lot of him directly, but lots in Oxford and the surrounding environs. It was pretty neat. And I'd never seen the Cotton Museum either.
Today there was a team lunch/fun activity stuff for the last half of the day. The only drawback was it was at the fucking Bass Pro Shop now occupying the Pyramid (the Tomb of Doom) and taking a huge dump on our otherwise lovely skyline with its ugly fucking gigantic neon logo on the side. Oh and it's an all-in-one family fun extravaganza in a fucking "sporting goods" store (killing-as-entertainment equipment store). The one thing about it that truly would have been nice is there's an elevator going up to the very top where there's an observation deck. Great view from the top of the Pyramid, I'm sure, but it was $10. Didn't wanna give 'em any of my money if I didn't have to (and luckily I didn't, directly anyway). Oh well. We all ate at the restaurant there (though we had to wait an hour, I did get a good conversation with Jean about education). The food was pretty crummy and it's a weird (stupid) design where the bowling alley is inside the restaurant. Where we were sitting was between sets of lanes and it was very loud with the thunderous cracks of bowling balls. A little difficult to talk. But afterwards, Toby did treat us all to a game and it was a lot of fun. I actually did pretty good for me (especially, or perhaps because, considering I hadn't gone bowling in like years). I got a 140. It sucked 'cuz I really should have scored higher. I did crummy at first but got one a pretty good streak with spares and one strike. My last round I had one fuckin' pin standing. I would've been okay missing it if my ball had gone ANYWHERE near it, but I choked and it went almost on the other fucking side of the lane. I did get the second highest score in the group and was only down by 9 points. Anyway, it was a ton of fun.
Other stuff. Tuesday was our group presentation for our Hackathon project to the executives. And Sharon, who at least among the four of us, is somewhat the closest to that level (executive, not that she's really close but she's in a more schmoozy type of position) was out due to a death in the family. But the rest of us dudes were able to throw it together. I even did some speaking, walking through the process of posting the before-and-after pictures. It went pretty well. It sparked a discussion amongst the top brass. I felt a little funny, having dressed up for the occasion in a tie, being overdressed than the "suits" (who weren't in suits or even ties). Oh well, it's fun to tie it up now and again. My tie was commented on, right after being asked where my french maid dress was (since I was acting as the Merry Maid for the demonstration). On Wednesday the adapter I'd ordered for my old hard drive showed up. I was able to successfully hook it up to this computer. Though I haven't had time yet to get down to extracting stuff. But that's pretty exciting. Ah, anything else? Well, secured some tickets for fucking Autechre in several months! Two shows. Super super exciting. Of course, I'll need to also secure some time off... Well, assuming all goes well I'll be able to make up for the time when I saw them (at their fucking height, though they've stayed very very very close to it consistently for over a decade) and wasn't that into it (what!?).
