i'll start from the top or something...monday night was the Dinosaur Jr show...i probably wasn't expecting a whole lot but i was pleasantly surprised...the first band was called Priestess...they were uh, fucking metal...i guess they could pass for "grunge" by way of early Soundgarden...(you know, metal...) anyway they had a fucking honest to god drum solo...though it was the best part of the set (since the guitars and singing weren't happening...) next up was Dead Meadow...uh, by the numbers "psychedelic" rock [distorted blues with lots of soloing]...i guess if you like Cream this is for you...i never really got what was so "psychedelic" about psychedelic rock...but anyway, they sucked...one song was almost kind of good...a hair more like The Velvet Underground and a hair less like Cream, but still nothing to write home about...miles better than Priestess though...

and finally Dinosaur Jr...kind of weird seeing J and Lou share the stage, but cool...now, i know they were notorious for being fucking loud back in the day but i just thought "ah, they're old now"...well uh, the show was fucking LOUD...i was really wishing i'd worn earplugs...i knew there was going to be trouble when i saw J and Lou each had TWO FULL Marshall stacks...i guess it helps give a nice, blistering, noisy sound...and as i said, the show itself was good too! they played a bunch of their classic stuff...on the second encore they even did their cover of "Just like Heaven"...one surprise was they did "The Wagon" off Green Mind...a really good song (good album too) just a surprise since it was off a non-Lou album...they sounded how i imagine they probably sounded back in the day...except there's some old dudes on stage now...the songs sounded like they do on the albums except much louder and a hair noisier...so it was a nice experience...i walked away with a t-shirt as well...

then the show last night: to start off Caspian was quite good, nice folks...shoegazery instrumental stuff...you've probably noticed i got their cd (Caspian: You Are the Conductor)...yeah, uh...this is how our set went:
untitled #1 ('wolves of darkness')
A Series of False Starts
Army of Skeletons
Placeholder
untitled #2 ('jazz hands')
so it was Josh's debut singing with The Family Ghost...that's a landmark! i don't guess there's much to say about it...it was a fun show...

oh, and hey, it's the middle of a weekday and i'm not at work! how the fuck about that!? (yeah, i'd taken the day off in advance...i'm no delinquent or nothin'...)

Some of us who aren't slackers ARE at work. Evan and I are totally hardcore. So I thought Army of Skeletons wouldn't be quite as cool the second time around because I was expecting the rock to commence, but I was wrong! I also liked the last song alot.

yay!

i saw dino twice last year. the first one in chapel hill was the loudest show i've ever been to, hands down, way past the point of enjoyable, i seriously thought i was going to go deaf. to say i wish i'd brought earplugs would be a tremendous understatement. i have never in my life seen anyone use that much AMP, period. plus at the chapel hill show they soundchecked for like an hour and that was insanely loud. the second time in new york they were still really loud but it was much much more manageable. i'm convinced that the first show which was pretty early in the tour when they were still working things out will be the loudest i will ever go to in my entire life. he uses 2 stacks+, the time i saw him he had two plexis at 100 watts each, and a major whch is 200 watts, into like 5 cabs. earsplitting. but so amazing sounding.

have you heard any of rather ripped yet? the clips i've heard flat out rock.

i had to look up that up...i hadn't seen anything about its title...i haven't heard any of it (i don't like hearing albums early anyway...i avoid it...spoils the fun or something...) don't care for that title though...hopefully it's one of their joke working titles...like Ham Radio for A Thousand Leaves, etc...hrm...well, it looks like that's the real title...it's on their website...oh well, i won't shun an album for its title...but still, Rather Ripped is their least good title so far...
