the show last night was pretty swell...we played well...it was by far the largest number of people to have been subjected to The Family Ghost...not that they were very receptive, but i guess that's to be expected...the roar of talking throughout was about as loud as our playing...but that's okay (though it did throw me and Jacques off on the intro to "Phatom Limb"...but they weren't listening anyway so it all works out...) the bartender told Brad that he didn't like the first song and a lot of people were covering their ears (the first song was "Taken" and i take it as a compliment), but when we slowed down our songs were really "beautiful" (i guess i'll take that as a compliment too...) one girl told Jacques that that first song we did sounded like "a punk jam band"...(but as long as it tortures people who don't know what they're talking about that's perfectly fine by me...) for the record our set went:
Taken
The Yellow Light
Like Clockwork
Phantom Limb
The Longest Day of the Year
our first time to play "The Yellow Light" ever...and i think it was one of our best performances of that particular song...so that pleased me...the show went on and on forever...after us was The Antique Curtains then The Angel Sluts and then Guacos (pronounced "wackos")...the show wasn't over til around 3 or so...that sucked...but at least it was a weekend...so the show went like this: us, some rock'n'roll, TOO MUCH rock'n'roll, TOO MUCH REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD rock'n'roll...i think that sums it up the best way possible...it was really funny how much we stuck out in the lineup...not only in sound but in demeanor...especially the last two band...just some wild rock'n'roll shenanigans...boring, predictable, wild, crazy behavior...rock'n'roll...and then us, standing still playing songs we care about...i'm sure i sound really pretentious, but i promise that's not the way i mean it...at least not totally...i mean, there's nothing really wrong with fun music and having fun, but there comes a point when it's obvious that it doesn't matter WHAT the band is playing at all so long as they're goin' wild and crazy and having lots of energy and the kids are just fine...to me that's what's really pretentious...nothing wrong with having fun, but why both with the whole band thing, lugging around expensive equipment...you could just throw a party, put on just about any record, get drunk, jump around lot and it's basically the same thing...and while those bands may have a lot of energy "Taken" is far more powerful than anything they could ever pull off, and we don't even have to jump around to provie it...i'm sure this sounds like i'm angry and just hated it all...i didn't...i'm just venting a few marginally unbiased thoughts and observations is all...i'd even play with any of those bands again, i'm not above playing with anyone really (unless it was someone who was trying to beat me up or something, that probably wouldn't be a very good show...) and in spite of all my whining here, i had a good time...my only real complaint (uh, in reference to something that overtly "offended" me) was due to how late the show went...having a lame day job makes it difficult to have a good time with anything too far past midnight...and then fucking Guacos just kept going...they finished their set...half the members walked off...one guitarist went back and started playing the bass player got behind the drums and the drummer for The Antique Curtiains got on stage and this REALLY ANNOYING TWAT who's friends with the bands in the audience was yelling into the mike...he's bald with a goatee and a leather trench coat...real cool dude...at the end of The Angel Slut's set the guitar player walked off while the song was still going and this dude got on stage, picked up his guitar and proceeded to just fucking shred...so i have more animosity towards this douche than anyone in the actual bands...but yeah, Guacos or whatever you'd call it continuing to go on and make up crap well after their set was finished was pretty annoying...one more thing that was kind of funny, the crowd thinned out considerably after The Antique Curtains played so more people saw us than the two headlining bands...i thought that was kinda funny, that's all...

anyway, enough bitching...i got home and found this cd in the mail: Whitehouse: Great White Death...ah...that's all...oh yeah, and our show this sunday at the Rally Point is on...be there: excitement!, thrills!, jumping around!

oh shit...i forgot...we got there real early and set up way before any other bands showed up (most of the last two bands didn't even arrive til after we had played anyway...) there was this drunk guy at the bar who was heckling us while we were setting up our gear...it was really funny...then he passed out at the bar...someone stuck some weird tinsel st. patrick's day decoration on his head...he was sitting up in his chair just out cold, not moving so this thing stayed on top of his head for the longest time...funny stuff...then it turns out he's doing sound for the last couple bands...the kind of thing you'd have to be there to find funny i guess...but if you were it would have been really funny...

I didn't see anyone holding their ears during Taken, but maybe I just wasn't looking at the right people. I did see this sorority-type girl kinda dancing to the song, though.

i'm just tellin' what someone told me who was told by someone else...

and that's awesome...the thought of anyone dancing on any level to "Taken" is very wonderful...especially the sorority-types...just goes to prove that enough alcohol will make you dance to anything...

It's kinda funny that everyone was so wrapped up in the party-time atmosphere of The Guacos that no one seemed to care that the chick drummer was absolutely terrible. She actually made me feel a bit better about my own playing!

I agree with Jacques though. The Angels Sluts were all right.

I have already remarked to anyone who would listen that your drumming was great last night. Also, Jacques, Robert and I listened to the tape of the show, and I must have said about twenty times that the drums on Phantom Limb are just about the coolest I have ever heard in my life. Aaaaaand, if you listen closely to the beginning of the tape (before the rockin' starts), you can hear me telling Justin how cute you are.

yeah, especially when their singer combed his hair in the middle of a song...that was so cool...i'm just disappointed he didn't start whipping a chain around at any point...

it's funny i never saw him standing up on the bar...there was a period where i noticed he wasn't on stage and was half-wondering where he went and after a while i saw him again out in the crowd...but i was disinterested enough not to bother looking too hard...
