Yesterday morning Mary Beth and I went up to the Dixon to check out the William McGregor and Elizabeth Okie Paxton exhibit. It was one of those things that at a very superficial glance might not have seemed too interesting, but actually looking at the art was quite engaging and rewarding. There was also an exhibit on Countess de Castiglione and photography of her but it also had a section on more modern influences with Francesca Woodman, Gillian Wearing), Cindy Sherman, and Nikki Lee that was all very excellent. Of course I always enjoy going back to the permanent collection and seeing all the breathtaking Impressionist classics (especially the Mary Cassatt that is my favorite painting that lives in Memphis!). We wandered into the new wing that has a few pieces by some local artists with some kinda interactive things for the kids (the featured artists are Kristen Rambo, Corkey Sinks, Danielle Sumler, and JT Wilbanks, I was super into the Danielle Sumler works that blended painting and wood sculpture). And the other wing had an exhibit of paintings by Elizabeth Alley, another local, with a very unique take on landscapes that sort of blends impressionistic and expressionistic tendencies into a rarely individual style. Then we took a walk around the gardens. It was starting to rain but then didn't really follow through so we had a nice visit. It's nice to see that they retained one of the Jun Kaneko sculptures from the exhibit a few years ago.

Okay, then errands and the usual Saturday things. I did end up doing some music later in the day. Got a part recorded. Now that my standalone recorder is dead, I tried to use my laptop to do the multitracking, but the little usb input/output I've got has so much latency that I think I'm going to need to come up with a workaround. It's really not going to work at all for anything where timing or rhythm is necessary. I have something that could work, I guess, but I think I'll rig something up to be able to record onto my handheld while listening from the laptop and piece it together later. Now it's another day and thankfully still the weekend.
