Merry Concrète Christmas
Dec. 20th, 2018 05:35 pmIt was a pretty great show last night. Before the show, I did manage to run through my set once and, for the first time, it actually felt like it came together so I felt pretty good going in. I got there pretty early and set up. I was festive with our little tiny tree and half-working Christmas lights that Luís loaned me. Also the bunch of cookies I'd gotten for it the night before. I played first. People seemed pretty receptive to my set. I did something new. I loaded a bunch of Christmas music onto a four-track cassette (the four-track recorder, as I mentioned early, I had literally dusted off after having sat on a shelf never really having been used) and ran it through the modular, fading it in and out. It consisted of most of the music from The Nutcracker Suite and the other half was old carols and hymns. Aster was next and was very good as always. Very ambient and with generative stuff. He also recently got a video synth and had it hooked up to a projector. Unfortunately the least obtrusive wall in the Hi-Tone's small room is painted dark blue and to the side of the stage area, but still pretty cool. Final Seed was next. This is Jameson who used to live here but now lives in Minnesota. He had three tape recorders (including one of those sweet Library of Congress deals, said he usually does four but couldn't fit one in his plane luggage). It was really awesome stuff (reminded me a little of The Hafler Trio, maybe why I'm listening to them now!). He had lots of atmospheric kinds of sounds on the tapes (and dialog and some droney stuff at times). WGM was last and he was pretty great as always. Lot of good music, it was a really nice show. I even sold two Memphis Concrète compilation cds! Haven't done that in a while! Met some people who were at the last show. Met someone who happened to be passing through town just that day (visiting a friend who does live here now). Had some good conversations and such. Yeah. Got to sleep a bit late even though the show didn't end terribly late. So I was pretty tired at work today, but also I didn't really do anything either anyway so... I'm off tomorrow (my last vacation day of the year). So, woo.
