A Show in August
Aug. 29th, 2018 06:33 pmIt was a really splendid show last night. A little "Memphis Concrète presents" thing I put together at Growlers. It was a very early show 'cuz it was double booked (there was apparently someone else doing the booking before that did not keep good records and it was just transitioned to someone else). Anyway, early is fine. I didn't play since I'd played the night before. The first artist (Adam the Astronaut) didn't show up. I was never in contact with him, the venue added him to the bill, but that's fine. Artificer ended up playing first. This was her first show ever and she was nervous (she said) but she was really fucking good. She did a drone set. This is Jess who I met at the festival and expressed interest in the modular meetups, etc. Bruiser was next and he was good as always. He had a few surprises as he did some new stuff. It started off very heavy and droney and got more soft and pretty as it morphed along. Aster was last and his set was also a surprise! It's like he's different every time I hear him. His music hearkened back closer to what I first heard him do, but he read poetry throughout his performance and that was pretty unexpected! All in all it was a wonderful show and I could've nearly been in tears thinking about how much talent we have going on here! Hung out a bit afterwards. Talked to Jess and her boyfriend, whose name I forget. Funny story. They were talking about how the one experience they had with experimental music in Memphis was eating at Huey's one day and seeing some people making weird modular music across the street at Shangri-La. Well, I almost knew that had to be our compilation release party and it was. When they went out they tried to cross the street to check it out but it had just ended so they only caught a little of it. But she then had to google what it was all about and that's how she found out about the festival! So crazy as it is, it worked!
