Yesterday was the most jam-packed day yet of Indie Memphis. And I saw some of the best movies! Mary Beth and I started off together with Ma, probably the best movie I saw. No dialogue. Very visual, also body movement focused (the director/"star" had her start in dance). A lot going on and it was really good. There was a q&a with one of the producers. After that we split ways for a movie and I saw Are We Not Cats?, a really good and weird movie. Kinda the thing that's right up my alley, it was probably my second favorite of the whole festival. The plot centered around eating hair. The director did a q&a afterwards. Oh, the short before it was called This Is Not a Love Song and it was about punk rock teenage girls and it was good. Reunited with Mary Beth afterwards and we watched the documentary shorts block. Everything was good. Not sure if I can recall them all, but none were bad. Enjoyable experience. Then we watched this movie called Little Sister about a former goth runaway who's now a nun and coming back home to her brother injured badly in the war and pot smoking parents. It was good. We split up again for the last one and I saw the "departures" shorts, this is where the experimental and animation shorts went. This had mixed results, a few that were really good and a few that were really bad and stuff in between. Though, it's the only time I saw anything at all bad the whole festival. And expected considering the nature of it, but the stuff that was good was very good and it made it very worth it. Always worth it to get a unique experience. There were a ton of shorts in that block so it's hard to begin to summarize it. Maybe sometime later I'll revisit the shorts, but it's a bit overwhelming now. Now that's it. It was overall a pretty goddamn great festival. Saw lots of really great stuff. Of the great stuff, here's my top 5: Ma, Are We Not Cats?, The Love Witch, I Am Not Your Negro, and LoveTrue. Okay that's about it for now.
