The Thing Lives in the Mouth of Darkness
Sep. 17th, 2016 02:16 pmRan some errands on Thursday night. Went to get a few things at Target and they had Mighty No. 9 for the Wii U on a hella marked-down clearance so I picked that up. Haven't gotten around to playing it yet. Also picked up some caladryl at the drug store for the bumps on my lip. It seems to be working pretty well. Hopefully the damn thing'll be gone completely soon enough. After work yesterday it was get home and rush out to the big night at the drive in! A night of four John Carpenter movies! They Live, In the Mouth of Madness, The Thing, and Prince of Darkness. I'd only seen half of those and it's been a long time since I've seen They Live. I think I appreciate They Live a little more this time. It still has that dull late 80s look to it, but I enjoyed it. It does veer a bit action movie for my tastes, but I appreciated the good parts more. I did miss the very beginning as I decided I'd pee before it started and (TMI alert!) when I got to the bathroom I realized I was about to have diarrhea. Well, yeah! Okay! There you go! Never seen In the Mouth of Madness before, but now it's one of my favorites of his. It was really fucking good. I liked the surreal, dreamlike quality that builds more and more as the movie turns to "fiction" (though it's there to a lesser degree throughout the whole thing). The Thing is still my favorite of his and I enjoyed seeing it again. Prince of Darkness, now that I've seen it, isn't his best but it was enjoyable and there were things I liked about it. It's kinda funny seeing a movie you've never seen before but whose soundtrack you're very familiar with. Matt was there and talked to him a bit (funny 'cuz he has the exact opposite opinion of John Carpenter's music as I do). John from work also showed up. (Amogh said he'd probably go but flaked out just like last time, that Amogh!) It was of course a very late night, but on the better end of things as those drive ins go. John Carpenter didn't go for the film lengths that Kubrick and Scorsese went for. And I'd gotten extra sleep the night before so I was in good shape (though yeah, getting tired by the end, but manageably so). In other news, sad to hear about Don Buchla. It's weird 'cuz just a couple days ago, right before the news, I'd jammed the first side of Silver Apples of the Moon on godsjukebox, and then right when it's my jam the news came of his passing. Well, here's to his continuing legacy!
