The Prose Poem
Aug. 26th, 2014 10:17 amYesterday I finished reading Against Nature by Joris-Karl Huysmans. It was pretty good. Well, there were certainly great things about it and it could get a little tedious at times. Not sure what to think about the end. Well, I think I disliked it at first but I started to reconcile inconsistencies if you think of it in terms of the negative qualities that both Des Esseintes and the Church share. Maybe not the "correct" reading given Huysmans's eventual conversion; but at the same time, this IS written before that conversion. Anyway, Mary Beth's been insistent upon my reading Ted Chiang so I've started into a few of his stories. I read "Understand" yesterday. I enjoyed it, especially the first part. She said that the end reminded her of something I would write, which is funny because as I was reading it I wasn't sure if I liked that part as much, but I do think I came around to liking it. Well, I think that's about it for now.
