the show last night:
we get to the Rally Point and Valhalla Rising's already set up... Leif Ericson (their singer, and yes that's his real name) had to be at work that night so they went on first...their set was pretty amusing...about what you'd expect...literally half the set was Metallica covers (well, and one cover of Metallica's cover of a Diamond Head song...) also Jon Reid showed up (a guy i went to high school with...) and i hadn't seen him in years and that was a wee bit odd...but sort of neato...
now, The Family Ghost:
to start off our set was:
Taken
A Series of False Starts
Phantom Limb
Like Clockwork
Placeholder
i was hoping Valhalla Rising's crowd would stick around but they all left immediately before we even got a chance to drive 'em away...but the best fucking part was this middle aged redneck playing pool and he was heckling us to go back to music school and play some Stevie Ray Vaughan...so we naturally had a field day mocking him...Justin taped the show and when i listen to it i'll probably post some of the better excerpts of our exchanges...and what was even better was after "Taken" he simply his "request" to simply play "something"...i take pride in "Taken" not even registering as anything with SRV fans...overall it was, i thought, a really good set...only a couple of mistakes that actually stick out...one being due to a dropped dumstrick and another a broken drumstick...and i guess the other being due to not paying attention...my biggest complaint against myself was my playing was a bit sloppy on the crescendo in "Phatom Limb"...which it is about half the times i play it...but overall i'm pretty excited with it...i can't wait to listen to it...especially for the stage banter/heckling...
one surprise was that Dusty (the guy who owns the Rally Point, guy Brad helped kick out of another band a couple years ago...) was highly complimentary of our show (and he's a dickhead and wouldn't hesitate to say "that was crap"...) he said it reminded him of the 28 Days Later soundtrack (i.e. Godspeed You Black Empeeror!), which i guess isn't too terribly far off coming from someone whose taste isn't firmly rooted in good music...and then this girl that doesn't even know any of us who was just there and sitting at the bar told me we were really good when i went up to get some water afterwards...compliments from someone we don't even know? golly! Dusty even concretely mentioned us playing there again...he said something about in 3 weeks after talking about the Hi-Tone show in 2 weeks...so if the Hi-Tone things becomes a dead end we can always become the Rally Point house band...i might talk about the show some more later...give some details...i dunno...prob'ly definitely will talk about our special friend we made that night some more...but i guess that's all i have to say for now...
i stayed up late last night hanging out with Jason and Amanda afterwards...i didn't eat for half that day so we had some Krystals...and then today i barely ate again (which i will soon rectify) and uh...i had some mail from Mute:
a Throbbing Gristle long sleeve t shirt
a Can: Tago Mago t shirt
Cabaret Voltaire: Three Mantras
Einstürzende Neubauten: 80-83 Stratagies against Architecture
and i guess that's all i gots to say now...hopefully i'll see more of ya'll at the July 21st show...ya'll should be cool like Chris and find out what it's all about!!!
