one week later...
Jul. 16th, 2003 08:50 pmit's been a while...i'll try to remember and throw in as much crap as i can...to your enjoyment, i'm sure...
the night of my last post ended up pretty productive...first, when i got back home, i killed the wasp in my room...then i sawed the door on my window to fit the a/c so it shuts with it and stuff...i was pretty proud of that...it seems like i might have done something else too but i don't remember...update: i remembered...i moved a dresser over to the place...woo...
Nikole and Amanda came into town last thursday...we hung out a few times...David too...it was all super-cool...friday Keith and i moved all the band's equipment from my parents' house out to the new apartment...and set most of it up too...that night was our "open-practice"...a few friends came over to watch us rock or something...it was also a chance to test out the new place...etc...here's our "setlist", not that you care:
A Better Way of Failing
Homage
A Series of False Starts
Uncurable
Taken
Placeholder
The Longest Day of the Year
that went pretty well and such...
that night the mosquitoes were insane...i barely got any sleep 'cuz they didn't stop biting me...the next day i had to get up and drive to Atlanta to see The Fall...so that sucked as i barely slept...but the drive was alright...i did get sunburn on my left side...though it hasn't really hurt or anything...possibly the aloe i put on it later that evening...i hadn't planned ahead and gotten the directions to the venue or the record store i was going to, but i had good intutition/memory as the ghetto gas station i got directions from was less than a mile from the club...so i went to Wax N Facts and bought:
The Teardrop Explodes: Kilimanjaro/Wilder
Cabaret Voltaire: The Voice of America
Devo: Q:Are We Not Men? A:We Are Devo/Devo Live
Shellac: Terraform
John Coltrane: Meditations
i'd been looking for some Teardrop Explodes for a good while...it's too bad that they turned out to be pretty fucking terrible...Julian Cope's supposed to be a respected writer about krautrock and postpunk and such...too bad his own band sucks ass...i think now i prob'ly won't take anything i read by him too seriously...and, of course, i just wanted to say that of course i already have the Devo album...the u.s. version...it's should be a crime not to own that album...i just needed the live ep and bonus tracks that the european version has...i also think it's a crime that i've gone this long without having a version of "Penetration in the Centerfold"...dear god that's one of their best songs...
i went to the Echo Lounge after that...i had forgotten to check what time the show started...i ended up being there almost 2 hours before the doors opened...but that's okay 'cuz i was the first person to walk through the door and i was able to secure a spot right up front/center...the opening band was called Paper Lions...they were pretty good...kind of post-punk, nothing too special but enjoyable...i ended up getting their cd (The Symptom and the Sick) after the show...mostly 'cuz i had come prepared to get some Fall merchandise but they weren't selling anything...upon listening to the cd later, i had the unfortunate realization that it's pretty lame...i mean, live they weren't great or anything but the cd was pretty sub-standard...even the bland post-punk elements didn't really come through...it was more just bland-to-bad rockin' indie...while they were playing i was met by Sheree and Cleve...friends from the state of Alabama who came to the show too...
now to The Fall's performance...i enjoyed it...the other two did not and ended up going outside while they were still playing...i mean, it wasn't great and it may in part be novelty in having seen The Fall, but i did find it entertaining...Mark E. Smith was just drunk off his ass...and pretty much had the air of not giving a shit about anything anymore...throughout the show he was changing microphones and throwing the mic stands on the stage (as well as the mics themselves) and making just a big mess...a few times he even went over to the band's amps and turned them down (once he turned the bass all the way down...) it was, uh, anarchy the way an old man would deliver it, i guess...perhaps a bit pathetic and sad, but i couldn't help but enjoy the show...the songs i recognized: "Mr. Pharmacist" (eh...), "Mere Pseud Mag. Ed." (THAT was fuckin' awesome!), and "I Am Damo Suzuki" which was prob'ly the highlight of the show...i mean...those were REALLY awesome...especially the latter song...that really fuckin' blew me away...it's just a great song...at one point i thought they did a cover of "Rock and Roll Part 1" but i found out later it was a song from I Am Curious Oranj that just ripped it off...although placing it in a minor key or something and being much better than the Glitter number...i enjoyed that one a bit too...also, for the second encore they did "I'm Going to Spain"...sort-of...only Mark E. Smith and the drummer came out...he played the beat while Mark sang...it only lasted a minute...(a bit of a rip-off after the wait we went through since the last song had ended...) though i did think it sounded better than the album version...
okay...i'm gonna continue in a new post now...
