Mary Beth and I went to the Symphony in the afternoon. It was a really good program. It started with "Starbursts" by Jessie Montgomery which served as an overture. Then it was Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra with guest violinist Audrey Wright. That was really spectacular. It had lots of very interesting chords and the way different parts of the orchestra bled into each other (and there were even some really sweet background drones through a lot of it). I also enjoyed the tympani being featured prominently! Next it was Erich Korngold's Suite from Much Ado about Nothing, which started off sounding the most straightforwardly "classical" and I was like, this is fine but didn't think it was going to grab me so much, but then it took some turns and ended up being pretty surprising and also having some interesting chords and tonalities and all. Last it was Maurice Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin and that was really good too. Anyway, a really awesome day at the symphony with lots of surprises.
