My second ever solo show went pretty well. There was a decent turnout. I mean, it was far from packed, but it was definitely more than just the performing musicians watching each other. Disco Volante (David) was first and his set was good. Pretty hip-hop/sampley with a lot of interesting stuff going on. I recognized two Helmet samples, because that's what I'd do. I played next. I thought my set went off pretty well considering how little practice I'd put into it. I mean, I did put in some and the looseness I let it have gave me the freedom to listen and put the sounds when and how they felt like they'd work. I'd had the idea of doing a power electronics sort of thing with vocals and screaming but given my cold and the condition of my throat I knew that wouldn't be possible. But it worked as an instrumental. I still went more abrasive and noisy than my previous set. That's always fun. I did clear out a few of the people that were there. And there was the fun silence after my set was over. Marisol was really good. Two guys and one did kaos pad (probably kaossilator) on one song and guitar on another (lots of pedals) and the other guy had a setup on a table with a bunch of gadgets, tape I think and noise making stuff. A bit droney and noisy and good stuff. Mike Honeycutt was last. He was slow to set up but his set was really good. Good laptop noise and drones and a guitar laying on the table that he got some good feedback drones from. It still didn't end too super late but the Marisol guys talked for a long time. They were real nice. He was giving me tips on being a "promoter" and insisting that that's what I'd become. They had a show in Nashville and weren't even sure if there was anything going on with this kinda stuff in Memphis, but he searched for noise and electronic music here and while he initially didn't find anything, there was this lone piece sitting there about Memphis Concrète so he decided he'd give it a shot. He said he was also impressed by how quickly I'd gotten back with the show booked and the information set up and organized. Met a few interesting people. There's this guy from Australia who I think only happened to be in Memphis for a day or two and said he was at some lame cover band show and went online to find something else to do, saw this show and was like "hell yeah[, mate]!" And Olivia (Vexadrem) was there and she had a friend with her who turns out to be an engineering student so I pointed her to Josh and they talked a good bit about that and startups and stuff. She also says she dabbles in building "instruments" so I may try to see if I can track her down to play shows too. Jill, did she say that's what her name was? Overall a pretty positive experience and we ended up getting like $50 for the touring band.
Though I stayed up late so I didn't get much sleep and that made my cold worse today. Or I felt worse at least in so far as being congested or having pressure in my head. I worked from home in the early morning and we went and took Trudy in to the vet. So she was looked at and they gave her some more medicine including another thing that's supposed to, over time, build up fluids in her joints to help get to the root of the pain. Then I went in to work. In the afternoon I thought I'd run off and get cold medicine but others suggested I just go home. So I did and worked from home a bit this afternoon too. I did get the medicine on the way home. I think tea that Mary Beth made me helped the most though. Well, also today is our anniversary! Eight years married! Now we'll hang out together and love each other in sickness.
