Goddamn, can I even remember where I left off? Okay, I guess I brought us up through Friday and started on Saturday. I had forgotten about motherfucking Friday night/wee Saturday morning. We get in and all that and are going to sleep and a fucking party springs up in the room next door. The beginnings of it were starting when I drifted off to sleep but a while late it just woke me up. There were people standing outside the room talking really loud. There was music or tv or something playing too. I lay there for a while trying to ignore it but I couldn't. Finally I put on my damn clothes and went out and asked them to be quiet (well, I informed them of my trying to sleep). These people were old too. They looked in their forties, which is old for having a fucking party at a motel in the middle of the goddamn night. This woman was all "aww" in what was probably a fake-sorry. I went back in and tried to get back to sleep. It may have been my imagination, but the noise seemed a LITTLE bit quieter. It was probably my imagination. I was contemplating calling the front desk or the police or something and I guess someone else finally did 'cuz from the sound of it they were told to stop. By this time I was so worked up it took me forever to get back to sleep on top of being kept up directly. Naturally I was on the sleepy side throughout Saturday.

Well, so I mentioned our record and book storing which was a nice way to put me in better spirits. We had lunch at Chai Pani, this "Indian street food" place that was awesome awesome awesome! They had these like, okra fry type things that were about the best fucking thing I've ever eaten. Well, after all this we went out to the arboretum. This was the only thing that felt like any sort of drive and it was all nature and stuff so that makes sense. We hiked the trails up to the main garden. It was lovely. In the evening it was back to downtown. We had a fancy dinner at The Market Place that was really really good as well. And we got up in the morning on time to start our drive to Pittsburgh.

Both drives (to Asheville, to Pittsburgh) were almost the same length and we made good time on Sunday as well (except for this road work just outside of Pittsburgh). Coming out of the tunnel onto the bridge and seeing all of downtown was pretty awesome. I will say this: Pittsburgh is a beautiful city to look at. I mean, I love old buildings and stuff so it may just be me, but the hills and the way everything looks is pretty rad. The streets are a bit of a nightmare, though. After a day or so, I started getting used to getting around town pretty well, but the roads are insanely counter-intuitive. Streets are constantly twisting all over the place and randomly becoming other streets and continuing on, but not as the street it should be (one-ways abound as well). I never did figure out downtown, however. Well, we got in at a nice time of the afternoon and went wandering around the campus area. We were gonna eat dinner at the original Primanti Bros. on the strip but there was a line and the guy running things was pretty unpleasant, yelling at people in how and where they should be standing. Mary Beth figured the one by the campus would be better anyway (less crowded, less rude: she was absolutely right when we ate there a couple days later). We left and went to the nearby Church Brew Works. The food was really good, of course the beer wasn't up my alley. I enjoyed the atmosphere as well. I had a bison meatloaf.

Monday was our first full day in Pittsburgh. We had breakfast back on the strip at Pamela's (this was our second place to eat at that Obama had eaten, a very presidential dining experience). Let's see, then I believe we went to Caliban Book Shop and did some more book shoppin'. I didn't get much there as all the fiction I came across was hardback. It didn't seem right, like there had to be paperback fiction hidden away somewhere, but we continued on. We also went to the Carnegie Museum. First the art museum and then we did a little dabbling in the natural history museum. The art museum was nice. First we wandered into this Pittsburgh Biennial exhibit of contemporary artists from Pittsburgh that mostly wasn't that thrilling (there were a few decent things here and there), but the one interesting thing was this film being shown by Stephanie Beroes called Debt Begins at 20: a documentary about the Pittsburgh punk scene in the 70s, I believe. I only caught little snippets and glimpses, but one of the bands in it (which I'll have to do some research to find out who they are and if they actually ever released anything later) seemed pretty awesome: three girls that switched instruments (I remember just drums, saxophone, and vocals...was there any guitar?) and they were kinda no wavey. Then on to the regular galaries. The first thing that grabbed me, of course (I guess, it's somewhat chronological as you walk through the rooms), was the impressionist stuff. Monet (then in the next room there were two more of his!) and Van Gogh. That stuff's always nice. Then the rooms of modern stuff. They had a couple non-Mondrian de Stijl works (as well as, in another section, an actual Mondrial though pre-de Stijl). The Rothko was, of course, huge and nice. There was a Pollock. There was some other really good stuff. My favorites, though, were probably the Monets and Van Gogh. "Modern" is generally my favorite period, but those bits of impressionism were top notch. We didn't spend a whole lot of time in the natural history section. But I did get drawn in and captivated by the architecture room filled with gigantic casts of lots of classical facades and stuff.

Then in the afternoon was our big fucking adventure. We went over to the goddamn south side. Okay, for those that don't know, Pittsburgh is built around the confluence of three rivers. Downtown and the majority of the city-city are built in the crux of this almost-island-like section. Obviously, the south side is on the other side of one of the rivers to the south. By the way, Pittsburgh has lots of bridges. Well, one other thing about driving in Pittsburgh is that getting around these damned bridges is far less intuitive than it should be. Well, to top this they were doing some consutruction on the main bridge to the south side we didn't know about that had started that day and we ended up having to take a detour to get to the exit. So we were in lame traffic and it was a bit confusing but we eventually made it. Also skyarrhea happened so we were in the middle of horrible rain. We found the restaurant we were looking for Yo Rita. It was like fusion Mexican or something and it was good. The news was on while we were there and they were doing a story about the very detour we were caught in! Then there was this story on flooding that happened during that storm and there was this old guy stuck in his car and it was all flooded around it. Their helicopter was showing him from above sitting up through his window with all the water filling his car. He seemed okay, but they kept offhandedly talking about how no one's actually doing anything to help him. Mary Beth's parents mentioned also having seen it 'cuz CNN ran the story too. It was kinda funny and kinda sad. Well, so we go walking around the immedate area. In a little guitar shop, the guy working there complimented me on my Sonic Youth shirt and talked about the many times he had seen 'em (starting around Evol). That was neat, I mentioned having seen 'em a lot too (starting around Washing Machine) but got kinda shy and awkward and didn't talk too much. While we were on the south side I knew I was never gonna wanna venture back to this hellish area (not for the area itself, but for the pathways in between). It was still kinda raining off and on and Mary Beth had wanted to take me on the incline (it's like a ski lift up the hill). Well, we went up the hill and drove around until we could figure out parking. By the way, the view up on Mt. Washington, even in the rain, is fantastic. It was drizzling but we went to the incline and realized we couldn't get in from the top. There was a mom and daughter waiting for the bus saying we had to shuttle down and ride up, it was only going up for some reason. We could have, I guess, but that seemed like too much trouble. We just walked out on this platform and enjoyed the view from there. It was a little wet and perilous feeling, but it was nice. Then back to the car to get away from that deathtrap of a south side.

Oh, I'm realizing another oversight from my initial post. In Asheville, Friday evening we went to the Y and worked out. It was convenient, as everything is in Asheville, and they had the equipment we needed. It did feel a little more jock-heavy, but whatever. It was nice 'cuz it was the first time where doing a press (not to be confused with a bench press) with just the bar didn't feel like anything. Woo progress! Anyway, so I'm trying to see if we can get to a Y in Pittsburgh as it's a little later (the south side having sucked up so much time). They were all seeming to be closed except for one in a bit of a suburban area. We were gonna go there but then it felt like it might interfere with our plans for dinner at Salt of the Earth so we decided we could work out the next day. Salt was good. I didn't realize it at the time but it does a bit of molecular gastronomy. Though thinking back on some of the dishes it makes sense. The coolest part was we sat right at the bar, well, it's not the drink bar but the kitchen "bar" similar to a diner where they're making the food right in front of you. And it was neat, it being a fancy place and all.

Okay, so now we're up to Tuesday. Working out was the first thing in order. So we were back to our directions to the Y I had initially picked out, the closest one, a little south of us but not across the river! We get there and it's just like a community kids' center or something and there was no gym. The guy there was nice and he told us we could either go downtown or to the one that was open the night before. As we had directions to the one downtown on hand, we chose that one. That was our mistake. I still haven't figured out how to park in downtown Pittsburgh. There's, like, not anywhere to park! And you're driving around trying to find someplace (we actually found the building the place was at) and then the street you're on, just a normal street, will end up suddenly turning into the on-ramp for the expressway taking you away from that rat trap. So we wasted a good bit of time trying to get to a Y (if we had known we could've just gone to that other one and been fine) and since time wasn't an unlimited thing, we decided to cut our losses and just go back to the hotel and use the crappy exercise room there. We did and it was crappy but it was still something. So getting to a YMCA in Pittsburgh was a failure on our part. That's okay. I at least did something on the worn-down nautilus machine.

Okay, so after that we head across to the Warhol Museum. Oh no, after working out we had "breakfast" at the nearby Primanti Bros. (details of which I alluded to perviously, oh, and the guy there wasn't just not angry and yelling, he was very nice and pleasant). Okay, after THAT we went to the Warhol Museum. It was fun and stuff. I actually kinda liked Oxidation. In the gift shop I bought Marcel Duchamp: Entire Musical Work. We ended up back in Oakland (the university area, the area we stayed in) to go to some shops that we didn't make it to the day before (Mary Beth to the comic shop and me to the music store that was closed). ACTUALLY, this happened before the Warhol (why to I keep jumping the gun?). Anyway, even though it was within its posted hours the damn music store was not open. I went back to the aforementioned book store that was next door and discovered, vindicating my suspicions, that there was a paperback fiction section and it was off, hidden, by itself downstairs in its own little basement. So I got a bunch of books that time. Anyway, THEN it was the Warhol as I'd said and then we went to this Italian place (Piccolo Forno) that does everything in house (including butchering). It was really good, although Mary Beth and I each liked what they other got for an entre the most! (Mine had boar, I believe, and hers had duck and pork, though it was the pasta and sauce I liked best in hers and possibly vice-versa. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but hers was the one I liked best. And she mine). The dessert was amazing: limoncello tartufo!

The next morning it was off to Rochester. We were gonna have breakfast at The O, but they weren't open yet. The one place around that was was just some sandwich place that was okay. Not bad but kinda bland. Anyway, the road. This was the shortest driving leg of our journey. I got upset 'cuz that morning in Pittsburgh I'd accidentally started the shuffle over on my mp3 player (which was an awesome companion in our journey). I felt I'd undone so much "work," but it's okay, I guess. We got in in the afternoon and had the pleasure of seeing Mary Beth's parents. I had a package waiting for me, uh, Barnes and Noble had just had its 50% off Criterion sale before we were leaving so I had to get a bunch of stuff, but we'd be gone so I had it shipped there. In this package: Empire of Passion, Last Year at Marienbad, The Delirious fictions of William Klein (Eclipse box set), Repulsion, Science Is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painlevé, The Last Emperor, The Thin Red Line, and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse. The next day Black Moon came separately. I feel like a jackass because of all the travelling and that Wednesday being a driving day between cities I didn't even know what the date was and didn't even realize it was Mary Beth's birthday! (To be fair, I didn't realize my birthday was "tomorrow" either. I was just oblivious of the date. I mean, I know when her birthday is, it's the day before mine! I knew they were soon but they jumped up on me!) Well, anyway, it was just a quiet evening with her parents. Her dad was cookin' ribs in the driveway when we arrived. We had that for dinner later. Michelle was picked up late at night from the airport by her parents. We would've joined but not enough room in the car.

So the next day. Our first full day in Rochester now. This was Thursday and my birthday. Not much really. I only got on the internet in small slivers of time during our trip to check my email and stuff. Mostly on portable devices (often my 3DS, ooh this reminds me of something else I forgot to mention earlier). Well, not too much to see. On my birthday, lame Facebook was flooded with "happy birthday" by people I barely talk to. I mean, I appreciate the gesture, but it is kinda goofy. And kind've a weak gesture anyway (okay, this sounds bitchy, I know, and I don't mean that I feel entitled to a bunch of long, heartfelt essays about how great I am. I mean, I usually don't send people nothin' via Facebook anyway. Gosh, I feel like I've backed myself into a rant and I don't think I really even meant to talk about this. I only mention it all as kinda comical. I've gone off track. And some of the messages were very good too, so I don't mean to poo-poo that). The thing I neglected to mention: as you may have gathered, I brought my 3DS along. I was carrying it around in sleep mode hoping to pass by someone else with a 3DS. Well, nothing in Asheville, but the bait was caught in Pittsburgh! So I had a spot pass exchange, first ever, that was thrilling (it's lame, but it actually was thrilling for me, I was probably jumping up and down). In the days to come, I kept going out and it kept happening again! Though it was always the same person. I'm pretty sure it was someone in the hotel. Probably a kid (I'm feelin' really cool). We "met" four times. Well, so far that's the only "meeting" I've done on the 3DS. At least I've done that. Okay, this post is getting too long and it's getting too late and I'm getting stupider and stupider so I'll stop now and continue all this junk later. Oh god, now I'm getting shit from livejournal again!? I thought we were past all that! Waaah! Okay, maybe it's working this time in which case it was only two minutes lost. No, it's not working. The page is loading. I wonder what's up. It's past midnight now. Are we going through all this again? Another morning and day. I hope I'm not subjecting you to another round of this goofy junk.
