noyes didn't make people live in his compound; it was all by choice. it was like a self-sufficient little town with its own gardens, mills, and factories. you only had to contribute to the community by working in it and you were free to leave at any time. plus, your job was based on your own personal interests and talents, and you could change "careers" if you got bored. it was really revolutionary for the time because women could work alongside men in any profession they chose. oh, and if you decided to leave the community, you were given a new suit of clothes and $100, plus whatever money or property you contributed to the group while you were there.

there were no stings involved, sideways or otherwise. noyes encouraged "complex marriage" among the community members. he believed that people should get their freak on, but never form an emotional attachment. if two people were spending too much of their lovin'-time together, they were broken up. monogamy was considered selfish and was therefore against god's will and threatened the community.

it was all going fine until stupid fundamentalists started harshing noyes' mellow. he fled to canada to avoid persecution and the community basically fell apart without him. the remaining loyalists turned what was left of the community into a joint-stock company. now their tableware factories are still around and stuff. pretty cool, huh?

Yeah, that is totally bananas. We spent 2 whole day talking about him and some other cultish dude a year ago in my American Communities anthropology class (which was way way cooler that it sounds). Noyes didn't seem to be ULTRApsychotic or anything, just a little beans.
