Mary Beth and I went to the Dixon in the afternoon. We finally got ourselves a membership! After years and years of talking about it. They had some very good exhibits as usual. We first went over to the locals hall where they had works by Jennifer Watson that mix painting and metalwork and ceramics (I think ceramics, maybe it was all just enamelized metal?). Very good stuff. Then the main exhibit was all works by Floyd Newsum (he's also a local artist though he died last year, so this is a big tribute to his work). Really awesome stuff. Lots of big paintings with mixed media thrown in. A lot of it was like a big crossbreeding of Jackson Pollock and Basquiat and Henry Darger, which doesn't define it exactly but maybe helps give a rough picture. Very unique and original stuff. Then the other big exhibit was these porcelain figurines by Chris Antemann. They were inspired by the Dixon's longstanding porcelain figurine collection, but with lots of sexual and queer overtones (they even had a sign at the beginning about explicit nudity). So yeah, it was a nice time. We didn't see Oliver. In fact, the sign by the entrance that tells you about Oliver wasn't up. I hope that doesn't mean anything! I came home to this cd in the mail: Sarah Belle Reid + Vinny Golia: Accidental Ornithology. Not a whole lot else. There was some time at night messing with the tv that was acting up. I forgot to mention in my last post that I'm on call for federal jury duty this month. So every night I have to call a number to see if I'm required to come in the next day. So I made my first phone call on Friday. Don't have to go in yet, but that's one down and twenty to go.
