Had a little bit of a rushin' around yesterday. After work I ran up to kinkos to print those flyers I'd tried to print the night before. Came back and packed up for the show. Mary Beth's back was really hurting yesterday. I hope she ends up feeling better today. It was a light setup for me which was nice given that the last time I hauled gear out it was ridiculously excessive. Made it up to Warehaus (the newer venue run by Jay of Havenhaus, now that he's tired of doing shows at his house!). This is the first time I'd been there at all. It's in an outbuilding attached to Young Ave. Sound. It's like a big garage (with a tall ceiling) or giant shed or tiny hangar. They built this white (plaster?) surface that covers most of the floor and curves up along two walls. It makes me think of the set in THX1138. And the clincher is they have two projectors going to each wall to make these crazy wrap-around video projections. I hadn't paid video any mind, but when I saw what the setup does I'd wished I did, but then Jay was like, we can do anything on youtube. So I looked for those old triangle videos that I've always loved so much (by Bruce and Katharine Cornwell but of course I couldn't remember that detail off the top of my head) and after some failed searches finally found them and a playlist too so I had Jay put it on shuffle. Okay, so I'd gotten there and set up. It's a little hot inside the semi-building (at least setting up before they turned the giant-ass fan on). But you step a few feet away outside the giant garage door and it was a really rare, lovely, breezy August night and felt quite nice. Once the fan was on it felt nice in there too. Kathy Zhou played first and her set was really good. Piano and singing. She'd gotten a youtube video of lightning and it was cool 'cuz with the wrap-around video "screen" the projection was both behind her and some in front of her. So it'd be all dark and she's silhouetted and when the lightning flashed it also lit her up in front and it was a cool and unanticipated effect. Then Ihcilon played a very amazing set of which I can only complain that it was quite short! Then it was Belly Full of Stars and it's always so good to see her play and it's been a while! So yeah, she had a great set as always. Then I played last and it was of course my first time playing with my new minibrute (of course, I've had it less than a week), though the main lifting was being done by the half of my modular that I brought (the minibrute's keyboard was at least triggering a series of events on it, I used its internal sound too, but not always and vice versa). I think it went pretty well. People told me afterwards that at times the geometry video projections seemed like they were synced up with my music. And there was a pretty good crowd for the kinda small space (I mean, it wasn't packed but the edges were filled up). Anyway, it was a really great show and really great to see Kim again and meet Kathy. I feel like I'm forgetting something, but oh well and that's okay and stuff.
