I remembered another thing I'd forgotten about the trip. Before leaving St. Louis, we stopped at Nathaniel Reid Bakery and I guess the dude's gotten the James Beard award or was a semifinalist multiple times and so we got some of these baked goods. Apparently the chocolate mousse thing that Mary Beth had was beyond incredible but I couldn't eat it. The almond croissants were very good though. We ate some on the drive to Chicago (but I finished up in the Chicago motel...which reminds me!). There's another thing I forgot to (this is more a goofy detail than a major thing, but...). That night when we got to the motel in Chicago and I was going to eat this pastry, I was very thirsty. And I was very thirsty for something very cold. It was late so I didn't want caffeine and they had a vending machine so I tried to get a Sprite and pushed the button for a Sprite but a Fanta came out instead. I was very disappointed (not that I really wanted a Sprite, I just didn't want a Fanta!). Anyway, but I put it in our mini fridge to cool it down for another couple minutes but then when I drank it and it was so cold and so weirdly good...I'd never been more pleased by a Fanta in my life and it weirdly hit some atavistic craving. It was partly its very coldness but also partly just the right thing at the right moment. Anyway, there you go!
