From Shitshow to Abstract Expressionism
Feb. 21st, 2020 04:46 pmI went to a show last night up at the Lamplighter but it was a complete shitshow. It was double booked and the show I came to see may or may not have ended up happening. When the nature of it being double booked was revealed, a few of the artists dropped off. And we were thinking we had two remaining from each show so it wouldn't be too bad. I was mostly there to see David Randall Howle III. He was all set up on time as well as the touring musician he was playing with. Fine. But the people from the other show had said they were going to go on first. Well, we sat there waiting for an hour for them to get started. In that time, the people I was there to see could have played and been done. But then this other show starts. And even though people had dropped off, there were people on the bill that weren't listed on the flyer and it ended up being three bands. I sat through one. A local lady doing folky stuff, she did that kinda old-timey marble-mouthed singing that I'm not too into. She covered "Femme Fatale" and "These Days" but overall it wasn't my thing. Then there were two touring acts after that. The first one started and the flyer said something about him playing his new album and that didn't seem promising (time-wise, musically it had already revealed itself as terrible). Well, by this time it was an optimistic estimate that the show I was there to see would start around midnight. They had also moved their show into the bar area so it made it to a completely separate thing and they didn't seem to be giving any regard to the other show waiting to go on. I had to bail when it seemed like things were just going more and more south. I felt bad but it was getting late and seemed to just keep getting shittier and shittier.
Work today was okay. I had a small conversation about art. There's this lady with an office in finance and I always walk by it and she has this nice black and white abstract art that is very reminiscent of one of the paintings we have here at home. White canvas with wide, black streaks of paint. Hers is over three canvasses (two thinner ones surrounding the regular one, all with the same sort of brushstrokes). I finally said something (fearing the window would be lost as they just frosted the glass wall of her office). Hers is something her sister had given her. I showed her a picture of our painting and she was pretty struck by the similarity. It was just kind've a brief conversation as I came in in the morning, but it was kinda cool to make it finally happen. I always see it and think I should say something because the art is so similar, but had been reticent due to my dorky nature. But it was fine. Anyway, now the work day is done and it's the weekend. I like the weekend.
