After our usual errand-run yesterday, I went up to Shangri-La for big sale thing and picked up a few cds: Vangelis: Opera Sauvage, Seefeel: Quique, Dälek: Negro Necro Nekros, and Roland Kirk: Volunteered Slavery (the first two were from the one dollar bin and the other two were regular used cds, I thought I'd also picked up an Explosions in the Sky cd for one dollar but it turned out to be just the case as the cd was missing, ah well). Then I geared up and drove back up to Jackson. I'd been worried about the time it would all take, but two of the Memphis acts had dropped out so it didn't go for nearly as long as I thought it would. Also, again thought I was running late in getting up there but ended up getting there early! Mormon Sin was first and it was more from the guy who put the thing on, solo on drums and vocals with more silly songs. Next was Earwig Deluxe. He had a very intense performance art thing and I liked a lot of the music, but the lyrics were silly. They were delivered very intensely and he was going out selling it, but there was a general undercurrent of goofiness. There was much jumping around and screaming loudly so it was a pretty impressive display of energy even though I couldn't get behind some aspects of it. Next was Rita Perry & the Night Owls. Rita sang and played guitar and the Night Owls are apparently this guy who played mandolin. A lot of the music was pretty good (if in a coffeehouse folk kind of style) though her singing was a bit over-the-top to my tastes. Habanero Habadashery was next and it was another instance of the Jackson people configured together to play goofy songs. They didn't play long. I was next. I think my set went alright. I'll see when I get back to it. Ben Ricketts was last and his set was good. Everything ended even earlier than yesterday. On top of the two bands bailing, I feel there was less dicking around in the in between times, also I think there were fewer full band type setups so that makes setting up easier, of course. So I got to drive back home not even tired. I had a package waiting for me in the mail with Vittorio Gelmetti: Muische Elettroniche (it was the other part of me spending the gift card I'd won in the raffle at work!). And thus concludes our two-part Jackson, TN adventure (and my first live solo performance outside Memphis, ooh).
