Mary Beth and I went to Iris last night and had a very nice seven course dinner modeled after the dinner in Babbette's Feast! We were seated at a table with three other couples and one of them was Amy and Ben. We knew they were going too, but didn't expect to be seated together, perhaps someone behind the scenes knows we know each other. All the food was good. And the courses were paired with wines from Joe's. And a funny thing, I actually drank the wine. Earlier, I was sure I'd just skip the wine, but after watching the movie again I figured I might as well give them some tastes. And they were mostly pretty light wines (even the red we had) and ended up drinking all of it (except the last course was a French analog of grappa and it tasted like gasoline and I did not drink that). The second course was an amontillado (and of course I made dumb jokes about keeping a cask of it in a cellar or whatever), but it was actually quite good. It smelled caramelly but had a strange, complex taste. As someone who never drinks, I wasn't sure how much I'd be able to take, but I don't think I really even seemed drunk. Mary Beth and Amy couldn't tell any difference in how I normally am. I didn't mentally feel anything, though felt a little physically, especially trying to stand up. I mean, I don't think what we drank was hardcore, but we did have a bit of quantity there. And again, I really never drink at all. Not something I'm going to start doing, but it seemed appropriate for the occasion (and we'd walked the two blocks over anyway, not that that matters for me). The last course was just coffee (and the undrinkable booze). I think we had a good time. Today at work was more being holed up. I forgot to mention yesterday that I was a sucker and fell for the Stranger Things New Coke package. I mean, as the only way to get any New Coke in this day and age, I had to give it a shot. I knew the contents, but whatever. It's just two cans of New Coke (actual formula) and a bottle of regular Coke with a "collectible" Stranger Things label and another "collectible" Coke Zero. So all that for just two cans, but I'm looking forward to actually trying it again. I remember when New Coke was a thing, but the whole thing happened shortly before I turned seven so it's not like I remember distinguishing its taste at all or anything like that.
