Aug. 19th, 2018 11:52 amMy leg might be even sorer by now. Ugh. Can't exercise, just need to let it rest. It's not super horrible, but I do limp a little when I walk. Anyway, yesterday was the second day of Continuum. I went up for one of the early afternoon performances: If...Else (this is the new name for the project that was Freak Effect at Memphis Concrète). It was Jenny playing flute and another guy from Blueshift playing bass flute. They had four music stands surrounding them with those photo oscillator breadboards and they let people just come up and play with those oscillators. It was fun. It was in the main atrium downstairs and a lot of people made horrified faces who were just walking around. But a lot of people came by were intrigued or into it. Especially kids it seemed. A few people brought up their little kids or babies to play with it. I played for just a little minute. After that I went back home and the grocery errands with Mary Beth. Then we came back up for the main festivities of the evening. First was Nois, a saxophone quartet from Chicago (its members were involved in the John Cage stuff the night before). That was good. This was followed by a lecture on how to listen to contemporary classical music. It was okay, but not super-informative. Next was the Blueshift Ensemble in the "green room" (aka listening room). That was really good. They were doing more work with the Iceberg composers. Then there were a couple other things, an a cappella duo (okay but not really my thing) and Amy LaVere playing with part of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra (and that was kinda bland, not horribly offensive, but the little orchestra was often given pretty cheesy flourishes to play and overall it was definitely not my kinda thing). Last was IMAKEMADBEATS and that was good, though it felt a little more restrained than when I've seen him before. It was interesting 'cuz he had a flautist accompanying him throughout his set. And he opened with a piece on the grand piano. His closer was an incredible rendition of 4'33". And he had people come up on the "stage" area one-by-one wearing the IMAKEMADBEATS masks, I guess each minute or so that went by. It was a bit intense and captivating as far as that goes. Then I slept a lot this morning. Hopefully my darn leg heals soon. I'm also annoyed that I was so unevenly active by only getting the one leg sore.
