Last night Mary Beth and I met Josh up at Minglewood for the Com Truise show. It was the first time I've ever been in the Lounge. The show was pretty good. The first band was called Fake Drugs (the singer was the drummer in the headlining band Strfkr). They didn't do much for me, not terrible or anything, but pretty bland. They sounded like a New Order, Depeche Mode, lots of stuff in the 80s kinda clone. They were two guys with guitars and they played along with dancy sequences or backing tracks. Maybe they're better recorded, I dunno. Their guitars were pretty mushy sounding and mixed poorly (sounded di'd when you could distinguish them at all). Com Truise was second. That's who I came for, though I'd only just recently listened to some of his stuff. Maybe I'd heard some of his stuff before. It seems like I'd heard some of his stuff but wasn't impressed but I couldn't actually recall it. Maybe I'd just been dismissive of his having a kinda dumb name. But I checked it out before the show and liked it well enough. I might like what I'd heard before better. But it sounded a bit different live, but that's not a bad thing. Though it was more bangin' live. I picked up a t-shirt. I'll have to pick up some of his records at some point (they didn't have any at the show). We stuck around to give Strfkr a shot, but left after two songs. They had some good blippy sounds sprinkled about, but overall the songs were pretty bad. Also, it was a bit distracting the singer was lip syncing. I mean, I know you can have effects on vocals live, but on top of the auto-tune and other effects they were so unwaveringly on top of the mix and he didn't always lip sync in time. Josh said he could tell the bass wasn't actually playing either. I wonder how much of it was actually live and how much was miming to a recording. The music was pretty bad anyway.
We had the first day of big room planning so I went to the Crowne Plaza instead of work today. So a bunch of the usual work. We were swamped with like double the amount of work we could do so we had to figure out what could be trimmed out. Ended up mostly keeping work for this one project that was dropped at the last minute. The rest was mostly taken back by the other teams for us to do on their own (given the training we'd given them). After work today Mary Beth and I went to Studio on the Square to see a free screening of Trapped, the documentary about the anti-choice trap laws so prevalent in recent years, especially in the south. It focused on a few specific abortion clinics in Alabama and Texas and their struggle with the punitive restrictions. The had a few speakers afterwards to address how these types of laws are specifically effecting Shelby County and Tennessee. One was from Planned Parenthood and the other from Choices. The lady from Choices was wearing a dress that said ♥ ABORTION all over it. That was pretty sweet.
