Okay, let's summarize this week! A little from last week that a forgot: I got some cds in the mail last Friday that I'd forgotten about preordering months ago: Venetian Snares: Traditional Synthesizer Music with Venetian Snares: Traditional Synthesizer Music (Alternative Takes and Bonus Tracks). Woo! Okay, onto this past week. What can I remember? Monday we went to see the last installment of the Oscar shorts: live action. A few of them were really good. The best was called Shok ("friend" in Albanian) about two childhood friends during the Kosovo war. Pretty rough but really good. Many in the audience gasped when the climactic thing happened (which, granted, was pretty brutal but it was pretty clear it was coming from the very beginning). There was also a movie called Everything Will Be Okay about a father kidnapping his daughter that was also really good and uncomfortable to watch.
Okay! Tuesday was the Meet the Delegates meet-up for Memphis for Bernie up at Spaghetti Warehouse. Harold called me that day to tell me he couldn't bring his PA because of the rain. I ended up bringing my keyboard amp and a mic and it was fine. Learned lots of fun stuff about the wacky delegate process.
This week the Paymenthub/Fuse project got taken from my team. Kinda sad as I was starting to get the hang of some of it and it makes it seem like we dropped the ball or something, but it's getting its own full dedicated team (it was probably too much for our small team anyway in addition to the other work we're doing, but still).
On Wednesday Mary Beth and I went out to this show at Otherlands. It was kinda this experimental game of round robin with some musicians from various bands (including someone from Nots and Mike Doughty, who moved to Memphis within the past year kinda strangely enough). It was pretty good. There were two drummers, each playing half of a kit which they would swap and two guitars and a bass through practice amps and a Moog Little Phatty and a mic through some kinda vocoderish-didgeridoo thing. The non-drummers swapped these other instruments back and forth. And for each thing one person would give directions to the other musicians via hand signals. It sounded kinda somewhere in the confluence of krautrock and Branca and Steve Reich. It was good and fun and an early show since it was at a coffee place.
Been watching that British baking show with Mary Beth in our downtime. What else? Got an order from Criterion in their flash sale yesterday: Mulholland Drive, The Graduate, Burroughs: the Movie, and The Brood. Pretty sweet haul. Went over to a coworker's (Spencer) housewarming party thingie last night. It was pretty fun. A few other coworkers came over too. I am definitely the old one in this crowd. Brought over a few games and we ended up playing three rounds of Tsuro between talking. Everyone seemed into the game, so that's cool.
Went out to Soul Fish where we met my family (as my mom's birthday was two days ago). We'd picked up some tulips for her and left them in the car while putting groceries up. Today being unseasonably warm and sunny, we found them opening up when we went back out thirty minutes later, one especially was more spread out than any of us had ever seen a tulip. Then by the end of lunch it was spread out even more. It was ready to get it on. Then we did the exciting thing of pants shopping. Remember my crotch-ripped jeans? Woo. Also low on dress pants too. Where I'm sitting here with one pair of jeans and one pair of dress pants I'd regularly wear. Yeah, time to shop, damnit.
