ateolf: (Knoxville Boi)
we left a little after noon on saturday (myself, Mary Beth, and Ryan)...i didn't get enough sleep...i woke up early...so i'd had this backlog of not sleeping enough...but that's okay...when we almost got to Nashville traffic was backed up and we were at a standstill for like 30 minutes...i guess there was a wreck somewhere up ahead...anyhow...we went downtown to where the show was at and were gonna wander around but there's nothing there and everything closes REAL early...we wandered around for a while looking for somewhere to eat...when we made it over a few blocks to the touristy area we made a mistake and pretty much went to the first place we came across: San Antonio Tacos (or something like that...) so, if you're ever in Nashville uh, do NOT eat at such an establishment...about the worst idea ever...i mean, it could have been worse but we all got a bit sick and uh...well...and not in the usual just-eaten-texmex way, this was something bizarre and sinister...it didn't last long but...yeah...it wasn't good...anyway, fast-forward and the show starts...the opening band was called The Entrance Band and they were horrible...i got a little nervous before the show when i looked up who was opening and checked out their myspace page when i read "While breaking into new musical frontiers, The Entrance Band turn on to the kind of psychedelic-blues-rituals, tribal-funk-hypnosis, and space-punk-telepathy that Kurt, Jimi, Fela, and Janis would be jamming to up in the cosmos; looking down to see where all the real music has gone..." but that description paints a much prettier picture than the actual music...didn't hear anything remotely resembling "tribal-funk-hypnosis"...it was just straight-up blues-based classic rock with lots and lots and lots and LOTS of soloing...the guitarist/singer could not stop finger tapping almost the whole show...it was just bad...anyway, Sonic Youth was good...the show was very new-album-heavy which a lot of it sounded better live...and it was good...as for old stuff they played: "Silver Rocket," "The Sprawl," and "White Kross" and for the first encore: "Shadow of a Doubt" and "Pacific Coast Highway" and second encore: "Death Valley '69"...of course yesterday i was dead tired driving back from Nashville all night...(well, not all night but we got in pretty late of course and this on top of the sleep i was already lacking...) but that's okay...all part of a rock'n'roll lifestyle...oh...i should mention the venue as it was kinda cool: War Memorial Auditorium...it's in this huge greek plaza thing with lots of steps and big open stone spaces and columns...and then at the top where the doors inside are is this gigantic bronze statue of a naked dude with a huge sword (and apparently a fairy in the palm of his other hand) and you can see his butt and stuff...it was pretty awesome...this was the war memorial that gives the venue its name...anyway...
