i was talking to my mom on the phone this evening...back on christmas she had told me there was one book she'd ordered but got a notice saying that item was no longer available...it was Pale Fire...you may recall that i purchased this book on sunday...so talking to her today she said that unexpectedly it arrived finally...so i went back to bookstar tonight and exchanged it, picking up in its stead: Girl with Curious Hair by David Foster Wallace and Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata...while i was pokin' around in their Amber called as she was on her way home from school and then stopped by and looked around at books with me...then after going home to take a dump, i went to huey's with her and Jacques and Mary Beth and Justin...
and now for the big news [drumroll] when i got back home after that i finished reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand! i must say it's the crappiest book i've read in a while...now there were worthwhile tidbits and things here and there throughout (otherwise i never would have been able to force myself through all 1069 pages at all), but there was far more bad than good...(i'm reminded of the time in the library bookstore where the dude told me i should have gotten a medal for reading all of Gravity's Rainbow...fuck that! i should get a medal for having finished Atlas Shrugged...) but anyway, through my own determination and power of mind i was able to pull through this challenge...of course it's difficult read, it just hurts a little getting pounded over the head with a message over and over and over...now i guess the most basic fundamental message underlying all the rest of Rand's baggage is "think for yourself" which is something you can't argue with...but if she wanted me to think for myself, why couldn't she have been a little more subtle and let me use my own power of reason to deduce the message and point and all that? huh!? and the characters are ridiculous...some of the writing is good (especially in the descriptions...inanimate objects, etc...) but overall it's not a well-written book...so much is so contrived...but it's certainly a good feeling now that i'm finally through! i guess my next step is to buy all of Rush's albums...
