I went out to an early "show" (or whatever you might want to call it) at DKDC. It was put on by that "Like, Really Creative" guy and it was a bring-your-own-instruments and play along sort of thing. It had three musician leaders. One was Natalie Hoffman. It seemed like it might be cool. The place was packed and I was barely able to find a place to either sit or stand over in the corner. I brought a little Monotron for something easy to carry and might be easy to play without plugging in to anything, but I didn't end up using it. Where I was over in the corner and with so many people playing it wouldn't've been heard. And then I kinda wasn't feeling it so much. It mostly kinda turned out with a jam band sort of feel. The only instructions were just a series of keys to play in (one at a time, so start off on C major and then after so many minutes they hold up a sign and announce A major, etc.). The whole thing just started off with Natalie droning something on a synth and that was cool but quickly as everyone came in it got real nice sounding (I'm using "nice" in a slightly pejorative sense, like "too nice" and not as interesting). There were definitely bits where some good stuff was happening but it was kind of a mix. There were some musicians who only managed to make things boring when you could hear them (like this one particular saxophone player who I could hear a bunch, though couldn't see him like most everyone). Sorry to sound like I'm ragging on everything, it was a fun diversion and there were good things that happened in it. At times it got a bit psych sounding, when it wasn't sounding too jam band-y. And when it was over this lady came up to me and I recognized her from the audience at Memphis Concrète and she wanted to tell me that it was her first time coming and she stayed for the whole thing and it made her think about music in new ways (she came the first day and liked it so much she came back). Very lovely compliments! Her name is Jennifer. I didn't talk to her long, but that was nice. Also, Mary Beth says she finally seems to be able to tell that she's really healing. She's still mostly off her feet, but after the scare she's been playing it much safer and thinks it is helping. So hopefully soon she'll be back on her feet for real. But we'll see. Don't want to rush it!
