After work I worked some on the live score. I got the soft, quieter parts worked out a good bit. There's not a lot of them in this movie, but there are a few and it's good to have something! For most of it I "borrowed" some of the chords in Satie's "Gymnopédie No. 1". I finally got around to working on some video for the festival. I found an open source video synthesis sort of software called TouchDesigner not too long ago. Don't know very well how to use it at all, but finally figured out something to combine some of the older videos from previous festivals that I'd been recycling and run them into each other and through some effects and have some fun abstract pixelated stuff. Took me a long time to even figure out how to get it to display on the screen and then export it but I finally figured it out! At night Mary Beth and I walked up to Hattiloo to see this play called The Boy Who Kissed the Sky, about Jimi Hendrix's childhood (though not named, he's just "the boy" in the play, but you know, still very much he's plainly and absolutely Jimi Hendrix). Given the skirting around legalities approach I'm sure it took (and also I guess since it's his childhood it's before he wrote any of his songs anyway), there's no actual Jimi Hendrix music in the play. It's a musical but with original music. Most of it is in the style of Jimi Hendrix though the vocals are kind of weird and out-of-place. There's this one main character who's Jimi's imaginary friend space alien rockstar thing and he mostly kind of raps. And there's a chorus of singers and it's a bit pop chorus. In the notes for it, the theater owner described the first time he saw this play how he was disappointed with it. It was mostly made for kids and he thought it lacked some potential depth that it could have. What we saw still felt a good bit like it's for kids. I don't know if they added some stuff with the parents 'cuz as it goes on parts of it feel like they have a little more depth, but overall it still has this kids' play feel (especially with the way the singing with the music went). Anyway, I guess I kind of felt how he described seeing it the first time. It was still fun to go to.
