Mary Beth and I went up to Rhodes for a Blueshift Ensemble performance. This is one that was originally scheduled some time back during icy or snowy weather and it was postponed. I only by chance happened to see a post about the reschedule the day before. So we went. It was really good. They started with Trois Pièces No. 1 by Nadia Boulanger. Then it was Philip Glass's String Quartet No 5. Next was "snow /// ash" for clarinet and cello by Samantha Wolf. And they finished with "Stay on It" by Julius Eastman. Mary Beth is a huge Julius Eastman fan (I love him too, but she got super into him after seeing some of his works at Big Ears when we went) so she had been super excited about this concert. We ran into Karl there. Was talking to him afterwards and I may have convinced him to take part in the electroacoustic thing at MC this year as the "electro-" part. And then while I'm talking to him about that, one of the oboe players from the performance came up to tell me he likes Memphis Concrète. So my response was to be I'm sure extremely awkward and ask him about playing in the piece, as I'm looking for one last musician. I'm sure there would have been an artful way to bring that up, but I didn't do it! I'll be messaging him about it later. We'll see, but I felt like I was being pushy and weird. But also, Brianna who is playing bassoon in this same piece was performing for the Eastman piece (it was the largest ensemble) so I also said hi to her afterwards. Then I had trouble falling asleep because I was ramped up from post-social-awkwardness. Well, it's a new day anyway.
