Mary Beth and I went to Opera Memphis's production of La Calisto last night. We went to the talk about it first, and it's apparently the oldest opera they've put on. It's all based on Roman (you know, Greek) myths and involves a good bit of gender bending and queerness. They also did it with baroque period instruments: archlute, bass viol, two period violins, and harpsichord (though technically they used an electronic keyboard). So that was cool and it was interesting to hear the smaller ensemble. Musically it was good and enjoyable. So yeah, I think that's about it for this update!
