Last night I went up to Lafayette's for the first time ever (even though it's in walking distance and adjacent to stuff I walk to with frequency, more-or-less) to see Mike Watt + the Missingmen. Lafayette's is a really damn weird place to see a show. I mean, it's all restaurant sit-down and it just has the feel of a lame bar. I got there pretty early so I was sitting around a while. Some people I know showed up so I ended up switching tables and sitting with David, Phoebe, Betsy, Mark, and Russ. The band was super great though. The drummer looked maybe twenty (and a lot like David) and was pretty badass, just nailing the George Hurley vibe. The guitarist also nailed the D. Boon sound. And yeah, the set was fuckin' chock-full of Minutemen shit. I mean, it was pretty much a "Minutemen" show. I've seen him do Minutemen stuff with the Secondmen before, but this felt like there was more of that content (those shows were a while ago, though). They also did "Fun House" and two Pop Group songs ("Amnesty Report II" and "We Are Time", I know they did "Amnesty Report II" when I saw 'em at the Hi-Tone so long ago...did they do the other as well? can't remember so well). Anyway, the band was really good and on it and the playing was just great. The whole feel was a little weird sitting at a table in a yuppie-ish bar, but that's the only downside. It wasn't a long show. They were the only band and they played a forty-five minute set with no encore (but we screamed for it for so long!...). Mike complained a bit about the people talking throughout, especially after they had the quieter bits. Ah well. I picked up a little bit of merch afterwards: a t-shirt and a poster for this tour, both with a unique light green tint (and they were the cheapest bits of merch I'd seen in a while!). Anyway, got home not too too late. Worked today. There you have it.
