Departure

Ended up watching Body and Soul yesterday (not realizing it was one of those early silent african american movies they were showing at Indie Memphis and that I had it as well). It was really good. At first I wasn't sure about the ending, the ol' oh it was all just a dream ending, but apparently the movie faced heavy censorship (even though it was made independently, it had to pass the New York board of whatever to be shown anywhere) due to its negative portrayal of a pastor. Along with heavy cuts, they also had to tack on the just-a-dream ending (filming it very quickly after filming had ended and there really wasn't a budget anymore) to lighten the blow of the pastor's portray so it didn't "really" happen. I found that interesting and it definitely made sense finding that out because that ending felt really tacked on (because it was!, and reluctantly). Okay, later Mary Beth and I went out to see Arrival. It was good and a pretty faithful adaptation of "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang (the story's probably better of course). Hard to consider it objectively since it stuck pretty closely to the story and I knew what was happening/going to happen. The few additions weren't bad, but they were probably better when they weren't there (the explosion and the Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure solution to time shit via the Chinese general). We wrapped up our date night by having dinner at Casablanca.

Okay, so then there was work today. I was supposed to do a deployment tonight but spent all day trying to track down Toby 'cuz his approval was required and I never got through to him. Oh well. We can do it tomorrow. Some cds in the mail. Yesterday I got Com Truise: Galactic Melt. Today I got: Inside Deep Note: Music of 1970's Adult Cinema. That's about it for now.
