well, alright! i'm back from new york and i'm alive and stuff...
Dr. Justin and i left early wednesday driving the moving van up...fine sailing until we're nearing the end of tennessee and a tractor trailer flipped over like some miles ahead or something...and we were just parked for like close to an hour or something...then we stayed at a hotel somewhere in virginia...then off to new york...fine sailing until we got to new fucking jersey! we had directions going through the holland tunnel to get onto the island...there was a sign right in front of it saying "no commercial vehicles" fine...we're moving into a residence, that's not commercial...and the moving van was the smallest type possible...only 4 wheels...anyway, they wouldn't let us through and we had to go to the lincoln tunnel...holy fuck! that was the worst traffic situation ever! it took us like an hour and a half from the holland tunnel to make it onto the lincoln tunnel...
well we finally made it...Justin's gay uncle helped us move a little bit...mostly watching the stuff, but we wouldn't've been able to get that fuckoff heavy couch up the stairs without him...now this is thursday, i had said before i was gonna see Erase Errata but too much moving and as they were playing another show the next night i didn't go (i'm sure i wouldn't've found my way to brooklyn anyhow, as that's where the first show was...)
most of the trip i was on my own...as Justin had these cpr classes he had to go to...so on friday i set out to do stuff! first was a trip to Other Music...i thought i had an idea of where it was, but i was wrong so after wandering around new york aimlessly (a large theme for this trip!) i called information and wrote their nbr down on my hand and got directions...it sucks 'cuz i put some stuff back 'cuz i thought i'd be going to more record store but i didn't end up doing so...so for once i actually went UNDER-budget for out-of-town cd buying! sad, really...but this is what i got:
New York Noise Vol 2
Whitehouse: Birthdeath Experience
Trans Am: You Can Always Get What You Want
Popol Vuh: Aguirre
Scritti Politti: Early
Vertical Slit: Under the Blood Red Lava Lamp
Liars: We No Longer Knew Who We Were
Bush Tetras: Boom in the Night
Sun Ra: Nuclear War
The Fall: Room to Live (more and more Fall stuff i have to re-buy 'cuz of more bonus tracks...argh!)
afterwards i hurried back to Justin's and walked really really fast a pretty far way...this combined with the moving the night before and the more walking and walking i ended up doing later in the day set my legs and feet to get really fucking sore...i was limping by the end of the night...foreshadowing aside, i went to the MoMA and it was pretty nice...it was a lot bigger than i'd expected (i guess based on my previous visit to the Guggenheim...) but i looked at all the stuff...their special exhibit is on dada so the whole upper floor was all this dada stuff on loan and it was really awesome to get to be there for that...then i made my way down to the Knitting Factory for the Erase Errata show...i got there too early though and had to keep wanding around...by this point my feet and especially legs are alreay really fucked up...so i finally found somewhere to sit and eat then went back, limping...
it was still a while before the show started so i sat down...it sucked 'cuz i couldn't stand really and spend the whole show leaning against the wall...the first opening band was bad...the next wasn't really a band, but a comedy-performance character thing...Divine(?) Handbag...i might've got the "first name" wrong but it started with a 'd'...i wasn't really into it but there were a few funny things...the best wasn't even part of the act, but there was one of those moments where just suddenly you could hear really clearly one thing someone in the audience said (i think it was a bartended) just suddenly you heard someone saying "i'm not really that tall" and she responded "yes you are"...and then said something along the lines of "shh if we're quiet maybe we can hear them keep talking" something like that...of course that's one of those things that the effect's only gotten by being there "timing heavy" humor or something...maybe i would've thought it was funnier had i not been in pain and miserable...as it went on i warmed up to it somewhat, but overall i wasn't too impressed...then Erase Errata were really good...they work well as a 3 piece now...they still have the same general sound...but the real special thing: for the encore the old guitarist came out with them and they played 3 of their older songs...i knew she'd quit to go to grad school, so i guess she was going to school in new york, i mean, that makes sense...so it was really neat to see that...but their set was really good anyhow...
now get this: the next day i was so sore i slept most of the day! i know, me in new york wanting to stay in rather than go out! but yeah, i was VERY sore! boohoo, huh? finally later in the afternoon i ventured out again...i got insoles for my shoes and i wanted to find Mondo Kim's...while wandering around aimlessly i ran into the satellite Kim's Video and asked for directions to the main store...but what the guy told me didn't make much sense when i set out as the next interesection was one of those 3 or 4 streets meet up at once so i couldn't tell which way to turn or which way was even straight...so no more record shoppin' for me...then it was time to venture out to brooklyn to see Liars...first off i got the address for where the venue was mixed up with another address (not that i REALLY knew where either was anyway...) i ended up being lost in brooklyn and it took albout 2 hours on the subway to get to my destination...first off i went too far on the line i was on so i turned around (well, it's overly complicated 'cuz where i got off to look at a map and ask the help dude had the opposite side of the track closed so i had to wait and continue to the next stop and turn around there...) then way back to transfer to another line...as i wasn't sure exactly where to go i got off called information called the venue and got directions...this is where i found out i was looking at the wrong address...luckily i was heading in the right direction and it was only a few more stops down the line i was on (and a couple blocks away from that stop...)
Alan Vega was supposed to be an opening act but was cancelled, so i guess it's lucky i didn't miss that? i made it in midway through The Apes set...they were okay...some of their stuff was pretty good some eh...i was still kinda wound up from being so lost on the subway for so long anyway that it took a while to even pay attention to 'em...i bought a Liars t-shirt...woo...then i made my way...though getting there so late i'd be stuck in the back (and it was pretty crowded there) but not many seemed to concered about being up front so i had no trouble making my way up to being about only second from the stage...okay here we go: LIARS WERE FUCKING FABULOUS! FUCKING GREAT! i mean, one of the better shows i've seen...it's weird though, as noisy as their last two albums have been, that any song with a slight resemblence of melody or driving rhythm the crowd's acting like it was some huge pop hit...i was curious how much the new album stuff (which is of course mostly what they played) would resemble the record live...as much of it's drums mic'd through effects to sound like actual, synths etc...but they had the drums mic'd and stuff it was reall close sounding to the record...except less restrained and noisier...any song from the next-to-most recent album was treated like a huge dance hit or something with their audience's singing along...weird considering how abrasive that record is...their encore consisted of "Broken Witch" (my favorite song of theirs...and yeah, people near me were shouting along the word...never thought i'd see singing/dancing along to THAT song...) and a half-assed butchering of a Nirvana song i forget the name of...and i know it may seem like i'm complaining about an obnoxious crowd, but it really wasn't so...people weren't being obnoxious in ways that seem to be happening with show more and more lately, what with the kids and their moshing and bumping into you and all...on one song there was a little but it was contained and it was brief and they weren't just pushing into everyone...mostly i was just surprised at the level of singing-along...anyway, i'll say it again...IT WAS A FUCKING GREAT SHOW!!! levels off the fact that i had to miss Sonic Youth that night...i'd wanted to make it to see Brian's band somewhere else in brooklyn...or at least show up after they'd played and say hi...but with the trouble i had finding my way around brooklyn i knew i'd best just get straight back to manhattan...and this time i found the direct way back...ooh, i even figured out how to look for the right train when they closed one side of the station and the trains show up alternating on the same track...semi-complicated stuff! took long enough to start to get the hang of it all again...oh well...apparently the venue for his show was changed so had i even a clear idea of where to go and how to get there i would still have been screwed...so i guess it worked out?
had about 1 hour of sleep last night (it really doesn't fucking feel like last night...like uh, 2 nights ago...shit, Liars set was just ending 24 hours ago?) hailed a taxi to La Guardia...so i got to have the real new york taxi experience! holy shit them taxis and their driving! i fucking slept dead through both flights...(stopoff in atlanta...though i didn't wait around...as soon as i found the other gate they started boarding...) yeah...Dustin picked me up from the airport...went home and slept...
The Family Ghost practiced...well, minus Josh since he's out of town...WE HAVE A SHOW TUESDAY!!! it'll be interesting...it's minus Josh, but we're using a real primitive drum machine for two songs and it sounds really cool! it should be an interesting experience! you should come...it's at Murphy's...if i missed any boring details i'll post 'em later...rock on!
