VICTORY!!!
Nov. 4th, 2000 11:52 pmthe beginning, i shall start from...Jacques called me thursday afternoon/evening 'cuz he had gotten off of work early so i picked him up...ummm...hung out there briefly and went home...next morning i took a spanish exam, i think i did pretty alright...afterwards i went to The Apartment but nobody was there because they went to take Jacques to pick his check up and get it cashed...so i went home and deposited my check and sat around a brief amount of time...my phone call was returned and i went back there...Jason called and we talked him into playing bass for our cover...we then went to Lastchance where i bought Blank Generation the movie...Richard Hell rules so, ummm...i'm hoping it'll rule...i do like good punkrock...we came back to The Apartment and waited a little while for Jason to show up and after a little while he did...the cover was once again attempted...well, we didn't really even make it to the attempt...EVERYTHING pretty much went wrong...somebody did something w/ my drumsticks and they were missing...we were able to find a different drumstick under the couch...then we decided to use that one drumstick and the non-hammer end of a hammer for the other stick (there's just a short part where Jacques plays on the rototoms) it's a sucky way to do it, but it would do...THEN a piece to the adapter for the microphone i was using for vocals disappeared (it was all falling apart, but still held together until i moved it and the piece fell off and disappeared) but i was just able to use a different mic that didn't need the adapter...but THEN a different adapter that was used to output the programmed drum track from a tape recorder (we had to record it off of David's computer to tape and play it out through a tape recorder, punkrock, no?) fucking disappeared...which really pissed me off 'cuz i was just using it to output David's computer to the tape deck to record the drum track earlier...that didn't show and it got late so the attempt was shelved for the time being...i was really fucking pissed...Justin H. came over...we went and ate at the Young Avenue Deli where our waitress was one of the hottest chicks ever...she had these rad glasses...and, of course, she didn't give the slightest fuck about any one of us..."...that's the difference between wrong and right." back to The Apartment...i had decided that i wanted to see Don Caballero, but Jacques wasn't into a show-going-to mood...but i got Justin to go w/ me (i was about to go alone...) here's my description of the show:
Act 1: the opening band King Don...oh my fucking GOD! this was one of the most entertaining things i've ever seen in my life...the singer (who, most likely, really has some severe/minor mental problems) was wearing this black jumpsuit w/ flames on it...well, they started off w/ just guitar, drums, bass and did this instrumental thing...it was this jazzy mellowish stuff w/ these metal breaks, it was pretty good actually...(the guitarist was playing acoustic guitar through distortion) then the other guitarist came on and they almost had to drag the singer on "stage" (they were actually playing on the floor in front of the stage...) they were quite the metal band...the singer kept singing songs about himself (King Don) and how he was 10 times more powerful! and hell and how he's the king of music and whatnot...there were two songs where he kept saying i've been/i'm looking for love...i think he was talking about ice cream in one of the verses...he also sang about space a little...in one song the chourus was like "burn baby burn" over and over and the verse was like "King Don bowls with fire" over and over...it was fucking great...he also did this really bad dancing...sort've elvisish...sort've...very rockin' though...i believe these guys are from Little Rock...if they ever put out an album i MUST get it...and i'll have to see them every time they come...that show was one of the most enjoyable things ever...
next, there was some guy w/ an acoustic guitar from New Orleans...it was really good...very indie...it *sort of* reminded me of Gastr del Sol...the stuff w/ the accoustic guitar only...less abstract, of course...but it was good
next, 3 solo sets from each member of Don Caballero...first the drummer came out...he used a lot of delay for looping stuff and was mixing stuff on this board of pedals and stuff...the first thing he did was w/ this Prophet 600...it was very good...then he started doing stuff w/ guitar...some of it was really cock but lots of it was good...he did these really noisy stuff where "too many" things were being looped at once...then the bass player did his thing...it ruled...he had this laptop and a Kaos pad and a few other things i guess...he was doing this pretty idmish stuff...it was very good...then the guitarist came out and played this VERY droney stuff...i didn't even realize he was playing until halfway through it...(before and durring this, Justin started talking to this chick next to us...it REALLY pissed me off...she was from Jonesboro, AR or something...but she didn't talk to him after the show or anything...yes, i'm pathetic, but ummm...i'm the one who's ummm...nevermind...i'll shut up now...i was gonna flaunt my indie superiority or whatever, but Justin's the farthest thing from indie...i guess that's what i was going to say...i dunno...i'm stupid...)
then Don Caballero played...it was good...i don't have too much to say about it...it was Don Caballero...they did one song from the album i have (II) for the encore...but their newer stuff was better...the guitarist had his guitar up to his chest and did this weird dancy thing sometimes...he used a lot of delay for looping stuff...the bass player had these cool synthish effects that he used some...one part the drummer came out and tried to breathe fire...then he said "my new blowtorch isn't working" or something like that...it was a bit amusing 'cuz the whole thing was all awkward and out of place...which is cool...or something...Justin actually liked it...he was doing this mild stupid dancing stuff...but i shouldn't judge or anything...rock on...yea...
we returned to The Apartment...David and Paul had this chick and her husband over...well, this just happens to be the very female that, last week or so, i mentioned being in front of me in line at Sessils and the lady checking her out started talking to her about the SCA and all...and then i saw her on Beale St. the next night...it was pretty fucking weird...she's really cool though...Justin left shortly after (they were watching The Sore Losers, he hated it...fine cinema though...) this Justin was there as well...which is cool 'cuz that was the first time i've seen him in well over a month, that wacky non-home-leavin' dude...we then watched the MST3K version of The Cave Dwellers...very good even though i've seen it 50,000 times (exaggeration, yes...) but a heated debate of mp3s vs. cds developed...w/ me, Jacques, and David for cds and Justin W. for mp3s...we won, of course, 'cuz he's just completely WRONG! the invited couple didn't seem too annoyed by us, ironically enough...she (Jenna, her name is) even wants Jacques and i to be in this writers' group thingie she's trying to start, which is cool...it could do well to help me get motivated to actually write...as they were leaving i mentioned to her my seeing her last week and all, and i was informed that she is not "the newest member of the SCA" as the lady checking us out told me...in fact, she doesn't like the SCA but they won't leave her alone...which is *extremely* funny...they're even a sadder lot of folks than i originally thought...as i never knew that they had to resort to stalking ppl to get 'em to join...they're from Wisconisn, and they seem to be quite very cool...Jacques, Justin, and i sat around for a while after they left and David and Paul went to bed...i'm gonna be playing some drums for Justin in some song of his...i'll prob'ly do that sometime the next few days or so...it was cool hanging out w/ Justin again after having not seen him in so long...around 6 in the morning or so i crashed on the couch...my brain had started to hurt...(not my head, my brain specifically...it was the feeling i got driving back from the Sonic Youth show in Atlanta in '98...before i pulled off and went to sleep in a parking lot...) i woke up around 1 or so and went w/ Paul to Piggly Wiggly...i bought some chocolate soy milk, super fudge blast poptart thingies (but some other brand than Pop Tarts), VERY large sandwhich, a coke, and a Caramel Werewolf covered in chocolate...Paul got food for the week...that Werewolf looked nothing like a werewolf though...which was amusing, Paul suggested its resemblence to a werewolf dropping...i concurred...it was crispy and tasty though...as for chocolate soy milk...i can't tell if i like it or not...i like plain soy milk...but this...it was very odd...it reminded me of coffee for some reason...it tasted both awful and good at the same time...very very odd...i ate two pop tarts and half of the sandwhich...there was a battle w/ Gato over it (The Apartment's cat, if you couldn't guess...) he was all like "oh dear god i want that even though i'll just lick it a few times and not even try to eat it..." he rules...i woke Jacques up and then rock ensued...well, i went w/ him to Dragon China and then to Audio Mania where i found Two Dollar Guitar's Train Songs used...now i have most of their stuff (save some a 7" or two maybe, and this very early thing that was only released on tape...) shortly after we went to Shangri La where i got Sentridoh's Winning Losers (used) and Yo La Tengo's Electr-O-Pura (cheap new)...back to The Apartment...
THE COVER WAS RECORDED AND COMPLETED!!! i will fill in the details in a different post, as this information will take up a very large number of characters...and nobody likes reading through lots of characters at once! besides, this post has far too many characters as it is...it was done w/ only Jacques and myself...(i will take this time to mention his great guitaring on it...it was great...) Justin H. (the non-lj Justin) came over and made us go to this movie, Best of Show...it was *okay*...it had some VERY funny parts but a lot of it was painfully unfunny...more was not funny, but i guess enough was funny to make it not feel like a waste of time...i then went back home and here i am, over an hour later still typing this entry...ugh! i'll quit now...an hour past my bedtime and i've gott work in the morning...woohoo...or something...
