Mary Beth and I went to the Symphony. They started off with a Renaissance fanfare: "Canzon Septimi" by Gabrieli. It's for eight brass instruments and they had the musicians standing at the front of the stage, split across the opposite sides, facing each other, for a nice "stereo" effect with the antiphony. Then they had a new piece that was commissioned for a world premier called "RAINN" by Karena Ingram. It was good. Not a long piece, it had five sections for the stages of grief and each lasting about 68 seconds for the statistic of how frequently an American is sexually assaulted. Then they had a guest pianist (Sheng Cai) for Saint-Saƫn's Concerto No. 5. It was a really good piece. They finished with Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 and that was also very good. After the q&a we went straight to Superlo for our grocery run to get that out of the way. At night I did a quick job of subbing the bassoon parts for flute and got those preliminary scores sent to the new flutist. Okay, and hopefully that all goes alright!
